How we quote for regrouting

We quote each job individually. This is what makes a difference:

  • The number and length of the joints
  • Which sealant suits the joint
  • Access and height
  • Working hours on commercial sites

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, because water and mould keep working on it. If you’re unsure, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you an honest view and a quote.

Helping us quote

What to tell us when you ask for a quote:

  • The address or postcode of the job
  • The rough size of the job
  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • Photos by email, if that’s easy

Asking for a quote is easy: let us know the job and the location, and roughly how big it is. Photos by email help us understand the job, and we’ll take it from there.

Regrouting in Alexandria

Before work begins, the tiles are checked. Loose or hollow tiles are pointed out first, because regrouting won’t fix what’s behind them. Where the tiles are sound, regrouting gives the area a new lease of life. We work on bathroom floors, shower walls and tiled floors, and the jobs we see most are dirty, worn grout on a tiled floor and shower grout that has worn away.

A bathroom in a place like Alexandria gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.

A 12-month guarantee comes with the work, just as it does everywhere we cover.

How it works

A visit follows a simple pattern: we look at the joints together, mask and protect the surrounding surfaces, do the work and tidy away. Most jobs take a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Outdoor work around Alexandria depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors is not affected.

  1. Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
  2. The old grout is removed to an even depth.
  3. We vacuum the joints so the new grout bonds.
  4. New grout is pressed into the joints and the tiles are cleaned.
  5. Silicone goes into the corners and along the edges.

How to prepare

  • Mention any tricky access
  • Let us know about parking restrictions
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints

When to call us in Alexandria

A poor original job is a common cause. If it was mixed too wet or not pressed in firmly tends to wash out early.

It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:

  • Grout washed out of a shower
  • Grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned
  • Splashback grout that has darkened
  • Cracked or crumbling grout lines

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Vale of Leven Academy, its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s.

What your quote should include

  • How the joint is cleaned and prepared
  • When the joint can take water or movement
  • Whether you can choose the colour
  • What happens if the job turns out different

Bathrooms and kitchens in Alexandria

In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

For landlords with property near Alexandria station, a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant. In the older streets around St Andrew's Parish Church, older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant.

What we cannot put right

In fairness, there are a few things sealant won’t fix:

  • Water coming from plumbing rather than grout
  • Movement in a stud wall or floor
  • Failed tanking or waterproofing under the tiles

Common questions in Alexandria

Do you cover smaller places like Alexandria?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Is Alexandria in your area for regrouting?

Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Alexandria is part of that. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing, and we’ll give you a clear quote.

Can you regrout if a few tiles are loose?

New grout cannot hold loose tiles in place. We check the tiles first and tell you if any are loose or hollow, so you can decide what to do.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Of course. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit.

Will there be a smell?

Some sealants have a smell while they cure. Ventilation helps.

Will it make a mess?

No. The area is protected while we work and cleaned up afterwards.

Can you change the grout colour?

Yes, plenty of people choose to. A darker grout hides marks better and lighter grout gives a fresher look.

Is the work guaranteed?

Our 12-month guarantee applies to all our work, and we are fully insured.

How to look after the new joints

A little care helps the new joints last. Our advice:

  • Don’t ignore a tile that feels loose
  • Run the extractor fan during and after a shower
  • Clean grout with a mild bathroom cleaner
  • Look at the sealant in the corners now and then

Before we leave, you’ll know when the shower can be used. Stick to that time, and go gently on the grout at first.

Stains that will not clean are a sign the grout is breaking down. At this point it’s a simple regrout while the tiles are still sound.

Why it’s worth doing now in Alexandria

Regrouting won’t help where tiles have come away. We point that out first, so you can decide what to do. Where the tiles are sound, regrouting is far less disruptive than retiling. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

No two jobs are quite the same, so each one gets its own quote. Size, access and the product the joint needs all play a part, and we will explain the quote if you ask.

Different surfaces, different methods

Kitchen splashbacks

Splashback grout picks up grease and cooking stains. Once it’s stained, new grout is often the only fix.

Shower walls

A shower wall is soaked daily, so its grout takes the most punishment. It’s often the first place grout washes out.
