What the job involves on each surface

uPVC fascias

Our work is the joints, not new fascias. If boards are damaged, we’ll tell you.

Garage door frames

The joint between frame and brickwork moves and weathers. We use a sealant made for outdoor joints.

Gutter sealing in Westquarter, done properly

Gaps along uPVC fascias and soffits look untidy and can let in water and draughts. They’re sealed in a matching colour where one is available. Common call-outs are for old gutter sealant that has let go and failed sealant on a garage door frame, on gutter end caps, roofline trims and garage door frames.

Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. On newer homes, the movement joints and roofline trims are what need watching.

A 12-month guarantee comes as standard, so you’re not left on your own once the job is done.

Questions from Westquarter

Is gutter sealing in a coastal place like Westquarter any different?

Coastal weather is harder on outside sealant: there’s more wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt in the air. The right product, a clean joint and the right depth all help it cope.

I let a flat near Polmont station. Can you help?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details for a clear quote.

Is gutter cleaning part of the job?

Only around the joints we seal, so the sealant can bond. Cleaning the whole run is a separate job.

Will it make a mess?

No. We protect the surfaces around the joints, and we tidy up before we go.

Where are you based?

Our base is Crawley, with over 20 years’ experience. Our area covers South East England, London and Scotland.

Are you an approved applicator?

Yes. We’re an ARBOMaster approved applicator, the approved applicator scheme for Arbo sealants.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Yes. We cut out all the old sealant and clean the joint before applying anything new.

Do you offer different sealant colours?

In most cases you can choose. We’ll tell you which colours the right product comes in and agree one before we start.

DIY versus a professional finish

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

Keeping the joints in good condition

After the cure time, these simple habits help:

  • Deal with a drip before winter
  • Keep ladders off the guttering
  • Clean out the gutters once or twice a year
  • Look for streaks or damp on the wall below gutters

A sagging gutter needs its brackets checked. Movement will pull the joints open again.

A leaking stop end is best sealed before the wet months. Water down the wall all winter can cause damp inside.

How it works

Our applicators work methodically: protection first, then preparation, sealing and a tidy-up. For most jobs that takes a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. We look at where the water is coming from and check the gutter is not broken or sagging.
  2. The joint or trim is cleaned out and old sealant removed.
  3. The joint is dried, because sealant will not bond to a wet surface.
  4. An exterior or gutter sealant is applied to the joint.
  5. The run is checked and any debris near the joints is cleared.

Before we arrive

  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
  • Tell us if parking is tricky

What we’re called out for in Westquarter

Overflowing gutters can look like leaking joints. If the downpipe is blocked, water has nowhere to go, which is why we look before we seal.

It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:

  • Fascia boards with gaps between them
  • Leaking gutter joints and stop ends
  • Old sealant on roofline trims that has split
  • Water running down the wall below the gutter

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Beancross Primary School, larger buildings have long runs of movement joint that eventually need resealing.

What to look for in a quote

  • How the colour is chosen
  • The length of the guarantee
  • Is the old sealant removed completely?
  • Who turns up on the day

10 questions to ask before you book

Gutter sealing in Westquarter: local notes

Westquarter is within about 3 miles of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

For an older house near a landmark such as Brightons Parish Church, the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move. For landlords with property near Polmont station, a dripping gutter joint or loose fascia trim is easy to miss until damp shows inside.

What affects the cost of gutter sealing

For a quick quote, just ask. What matters most is:

  • The number of rooms or windows
  • The number and length of the joints
  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
  • Any mould that needs treating

Leaving a failed joint usually makes the job bigger, not smaller, because water and mould keep working on it. If you are not sure whether it needs doing, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Asking for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in contact, it helps to mention:

  • Any access issues, like height or stairs
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
  • Where the property is
  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email

Want a quote for gutter sealing? Please drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us about the job. We’ll explain what we’d do and give you a clear quote before we start.

What sealant work cannot fix

Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:

  • Blocked downpipes
  • Brackets that have snapped or loosened
  • Rotten or damaged fascia boards

If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think.
