About our gutter sealing in The Hummicks

Gutter and fascia replacement is not our trade, and nor is roofing. What sealant does is close joints and it cannot mend broken brackets, split sections or blocked downpipes. We work on soffit joints, uPVC fascias and gutter joints, and people most often call us about earlier gutter repairs that have peeled off and fascia boards with gaps between them.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in The Hummicks is booked around the forecast. Tell us about access to all sides of the building, including outbuildings and garages.

We stand behind the work with a one-year guarantee.

Questions from The Hummicks

Do you cover smaller places like The Hummicks?

Yes. The Hummicks is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Is gutter sealing in a coastal place like The Hummicks any different?

Near the sea, outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland, so preparation and the right sealant matter all the more. It’s worth checking the walls that face the sea first.

Can I do it myself?

For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Yes. All of the old material is cut out and the joint cleaned before resealing.

What should I tell you?

The location, the problem and the rough size of the job. If you can, email a few photos.

Where are you based?

We’re based in Crawley, and we cover South East England, London and all of Scotland.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. We work for householders, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels across Hampshire.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes. Commercial and hotel work is a large part of what we do, as well as homes. We can talk about working times when we quote.

How the job changes by surface

Roofline trims

We seal the trims, not the roof. A roofer deals with the roof itself.

Gutter end caps

Stop ends hold back water at the end of a run. When their seal fails, they drip.

Looking after it afterwards

No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. Our tips:

  • Do not lean ladders against the gutter itself
  • Look at the gutters while it’s raining
  • Deal with a drip before winter
  • Get a dropping gutter looked at quickly

Have a look at the gutter during a downpour now and then. Drips are easiest to spot while it’s raining.

A leaking garage frame lets water reach stored items. Resealing the frame is a quick job while the frame is sound.

What we cannot put right

Sealant isn’t the answer to every problem, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not solve:

  • Fascias that need replacing
  • Roof leaks, slipped tiles or failed flashing (a roofer’s job)
  • Water backing up from a blocked pipe

If you’re not sure, just call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer.

What we seal

  • Soffit joints
  • Gutter end caps
  • Gutter joints
  • Garage door frames
  • uPVC fascias
  • Roofline trims

What happens if it’s left?

Replacing fascias because of open joints is usually unnecessary. A neat seal closes the gaps as long as the boards are in good condition. In a small place like The Hummicks, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

We don’t show prices on the website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. Call for a quick quote.

Outside joints around The Hummicks

The Hummicks is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Rainfall in the South East is lower than in much of the UK, but outside sealant still needs a dry, clean surface, so outdoor work is planned around the forecast.

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of the Blessed Virgin and Child, old and new materials meet at the roofline and walls, which is where sealant earns its keep. Schools such as Beaulieu Village Primary School are buildings too, and movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s. Rented homes near Beaulieu Road station change hands often, and a gutter joint that drips onto the wall can turn into a damp complaint, so it’s worth checking.

What happens on the day

Once we are on site, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. Most jobs then take an hour or two for a few joints, longer for a full run. Somewhere like The Hummicks needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. We bring what the job needs, so it can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. We look at where the water is coming from and check the gutter is not broken or sagging.
  2. The joint or trim is cleaned out and old sealant removed.
  3. The joint is dried, because sealant will not bond to a wet surface.
  4. Gutter or exterior sealant is applied and finished.
  5. We check the run and clear any debris we find while we are there.

Before we arrive

  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Clear items away from the joints we’re working on
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules

Should I try it myself first?

Not every job suits DIY: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas need the right product, the right access and the right method.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.
