Gutter sealing in Stanmer, done properly

A leaking gutter joint marks the wall and wets the ground underneath. Resealing the joint is often all it needs if the gutter is not damaged. If you have leaking gutter joints and stop ends and rain getting in around a garage door, we can help, on gutter end caps, roofline trims and garage door frames alike.

Around Stanmer, older buildings can be stone, brick or timber-framed, many with extensions added later. The joints where those materials meet are the weak points, and they need the right sealant at the right depth.

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job, large or small.

What we can’t put right

It helps to know what we cannot do too:

  • Gutters that have dropped or pulled away
  • Guttering that needs replacing
  • Leaks from the roof rather than a joint

If you’re not sure, just phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • uPVC fascias
  • Gutter end caps
  • Roofline trims
  • Garage door frames
  • Soffit joints
  • Gutter joints

Can I do it myself?

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

Not every job suits DIY: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas need the right product, the right access and the right method.

Different surfaces, different methods

Soffit joints

Soffit joints are sealed in a colour to suit, where one is available.

uPVC fascias

Open fascia joints look untidy and can let water in. A neat bead closes them up.

Looking after it afterwards

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Sort out a dripping joint early
  • Clean out the gutters once or twice a year
  • Check that water runs out of the downpipes
  • Rest ladders on the wall, not the gutter

If a gutter starts to sag, get the brackets looked at. Movement will pull the joints open again.

Rain getting in round a garage door frame can damage what’s stored inside. A reseal sorts it while the frame is sound.

How it works

At the end, we look at the finished work together. The work normally takes anything from an hour or two to a few hours, depending on how much there is to do. For a village or hamlet like Stanmer, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. Everything for the job comes with us, so a second trip is avoided where possible.

  1. First we agree which joints need sealing.
  2. We clean out each joint.
  3. The joints are dried.
  4. We apply exterior or gutter sealant and finish it neatly.
  5. The joints are checked once sealed.

Before we arrive

  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks
  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can

What we’re called out for in Stanmer

Gutter joints depend on seals that wear out. Temperature changes make gutters move and that movement opens up tired joints.

These are the problems we are asked about most:

  • Earlier gutter repairs that have peeled off
  • Dripping gutter ends
  • Garage door frames letting rain in
  • Damp patches inside below a leaking gutter

If you let a flat or house near Falmer station, a dripping gutter joint or loose fascia trim is easy to miss until damp shows inside.

Questions to ask before you book

  • When the joint can take water or movement
  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • Which sealant they’ll use, and why
  • Who turns up on the day

Walls and rooflines in Stanmer

Historic houses like Preston Manor & Gardens (about 2.8 miles south-west) are a reminder that the area around Stanmer has older buildings as well as new. Where a home is older, older walls and rooflines need a sealant that moves with them and suits the material. The South East is one of the drier parts of the UK, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind.

Homes close to Stanmer Church include some older properties, and old and new materials meet at the roofline and walls, which is where sealant earns its keep. Schools such as Coldean Primary School are buildings too, and its movement joints, gutters and trims need looking after like any other building’s.
