What happens on the day

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us the job and we’ll take it from there. The job generally takes an hour or two for a few joints, longer for a full run, including the tidy-up. Somewhere like Nine Ashes needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. Everything for the job comes with us, so a second trip is avoided where possible.

  1. We find where the water is coming from and check the gutter is sound.
  2. We remove the old sealant and clean the joint.
  3. We dry the joint so the new sealant can bond.
  4. We seal the joint with a sealant made for gutters.
  5. We check the run and clear debris near the joints.

Preparing for the visit

  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
  • Clear the area around the work

Questions from Nine Ashes

Do you cover smaller places like Nine Ashes?

Yes. Nine Ashes is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Do you work for landlords with property near Ingatestone station?

Yes. We work for letting agents and landlords as well as homeowners. Just ring 0345 464 0079 or email us with the address and what needs doing, and we’ll give you a clear price.

How long should I leave it?

That depends on the sealant used, so please follow the time we give you.

Will it make a mess?

Tidy work is part of the job. We protect what’s around the joints.

Where do you work from?

We’re a Crawley-based firm, with over 20 years’ experience. Our area covers South East England, London and Scotland.

Will you clear out my gutters?

The joints we seal are cleaned out and clear debris we find nearby. Cleaning the whole run is a different job.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. We’re an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Is it possible to stop a gutter joint dripping with sealant?

In most cases, yes. If the gutter is sagging or cracked, sealing won’t last and we’ll say so.

Nine Ashes buildings and the weather

With historic houses such as Ingatestone Hall (about 4.6 miles south-east) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Nine Ashes as well as newer homes. Where a home is older, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth. The South East is one of the drier parts of the UK, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind.

In the older streets around Church of St Laurence, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain. For landlords with property near Ingatestone station, a dripping gutter joint or loose fascia trim is easy to miss until damp shows inside. Schools such as Blackmore Primary School are buildings too, and movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s.

Leave it or put it right?

A dripping gutter joint keeps wetting the same patch of wall. Left, it can stain walls and lead to damp, so it’s worth sealing early. Older cottages and farmhouses around Nine Ashes can have timber floors and frames, where water from a failed joint can cause rot if it’s left.

Looking after it afterwards

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Look along the fascias for open joints
  • Keep downpipes clear
  • Get a dropping gutter looked at quickly
  • Keep the gutters clear of debris

Check the joints after heavy rain. It’s the easiest time to see a leak.

A leaking stop end is best sealed before the wet months. A winter of drips can lead to damp patches inside.

Quotes for gutter sealing in Nine Ashes

There’s no set price list. What we look at:

  • Any working-time requirements on site
  • The number and length of the joints
  • The number of rooms or windows
  • Access and height

A few things move the cost up or down: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, whether mould needs treating, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

Helping us quote

You do not need to know the technical terms. It helps if you can tell us:

  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • A few pictures by email, if you can

Call for a quick quote, or email us if that is easier. Tell us about the joints that need doing and we’ll talk you through the work.

How the job changes by surface

Garage door frames

Resealing a garage door frame keeps rain and draughts out.

Soffit joints

We choose a sealant colour that suits the soffit, where one is available.

Can I do it myself?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

Some jobs are best left to a professional: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs call for the right materials, safe access and experience.
