Maud: your questions answered

Can you do gutter sealing in Maud?

Yes, Maud is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing.

Do you cover smaller places like Maud?

Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Do you replace gutters or fascias?

That’s not something we do. We seal joints and replacement is a job for an installer.

Is sealant enough for a gutter that has dropped?

Sealing a sagging joint will not last. A gutter installer needs to refix it.

What do you put in the joint?

Each joint gets the product that suits it. Where it moves, gets wet or faces the weather makes a difference, and we’ll explain our choice.

Will sealant fix a dripping gutter joint?

Often, yes. Cleaning, drying and resealing the joint generally works. A split or warped section needs replacing.

Is sealing fascia joints something you do?

Yes. Our work is the joints and we will let you know if a board has failed.

Will it make a mess?

No. The area is protected while we work and cleaned up afterwards.

Gutter sealing in Maud, done properly

A drip at a gutter joint is easy to ignore, but the water lands on the same spot every time it rains. Resealing it is a small job if the gutter is otherwise in good order. We’re often asked to deal with fascia boards with gaps between them and drips from gutter joints and end caps, across gutter end caps, roofline trims and gutter joints.

Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. On newer homes, the movement joints and roofline trims are what need watching.

All our work is covered by a one-year guarantee.

When it is not the sealant

To be straight with you, there are a few things sealant won’t fix:

  • Brackets that have snapped or loosened
  • Downpipes that are blocked or broken
  • Problems with the roof covering

If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Gutter end caps
  • Soffit joints
  • uPVC fascias
  • Garage door frames
  • Roofline trims
  • Gutter joints

For landlords and businesses

Failed sealant is one of the commonest items on a check-out report, and it’s easy to sort out between tenants. We can quote for more than one property at once.

Businesses can book us for washrooms, kitchens, offices and more. For commercial premises, we can talk through working times when we quote.

What we do, step by step

Before we leave, we go over the finished joints with you. The work normally takes a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access, depending on the size of the job. Outside jobs in Maud need a dry day, because sealant won’t bond to a wet joint, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. First, we find the drip and check the gutter is not cracked or sagging.
  2. We clean out the joint and take out the old sealant.
  3. The area is dried so the sealant can bond.
  4. Gutter or exterior sealant is applied and finished.
  5. We look along the gutter and clear debris around the joints.

How to prepare

Different surfaces, different methods

uPVC fascias

Gaps in fascias spoil the roofline. A neat bead closes them up.

Gutter joints

Gutter joints move and sit in water. A gutter sealant made for the job holds best.

Aftercare tips

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Keep downpipes clear
  • Keep ladders off the guttering
  • Deal with a drip before winter
  • Have sagging gutters refixed early

Keep the gutters clear of leaves and moss, so water drains away past the joints. Water left in a gutter tests every joint.

If an end cap is dripping, deal with it before winter. A winter of drips can lead to damp patches.

Should I try it myself first?

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

Outside joints around Maud

Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex. Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

For jobs in and around Maud, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish. Around Maud, as everywhere, gutter sealing is only as good as the preparation behind it.
