About our gutter sealing in Howgate
For gutter sealant to hold, the joint has to be clean and dry. So the old sealant and grime come out first and the joint is dried before the new sealant goes in. Common call-outs are for streaks down the brickwork from a leaking joint and damp on an inside wall under a dripping gutter, on soffit joints, garage door frames and gutter end caps.
Older stone buildings need a sealant that suits the stone, not an acetoxy product that can mark or attack it. On newer homes, the movement joints and roofline trims are what need watching.

Surface by surface
Garage door frames
Frame-to-brick joints face the weather. An exterior sealant suits them.
Soffit joints
Open soffit joints let draughts in. We close them with a suitable sealant.
Questions from Howgate
Do you cover smaller places like Howgate?
Yes, Howgate is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
What guarantee comes with gutter sealing in Howgate?
Every job comes with our one-year guarantee, wherever it is. We’re fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.
Is sealing fascia joints something you do?
Yes. We seal open joints along fascias and soffits in a matching colour.
Where do you work from?
Our base is Crawley. Our area covers South East England, London and Scotland.
Will there be a smell?
That depends on the sealant. Some smell for a while, some hardly at all, and any smell fades as they cure.
Do you replace gutters or fascias?
That’s not something we do. Our work is sealing joints and replacement is a job for an installer.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. We are fully insured.
What should I tell you?
Tell us what needs doing and where, with pictures by email if possible. We will ask anything else we need to know.
What affects the quote in Howgate
The quote reflects the job in front of us. We look at:
- How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
- Whether the work is at height
- How much there is to do
- The old material and how stubborn it is
Rather than a set price list, we price the job in front of us: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. The price is agreed before we begin.
What to tell us for a quote
To help us quote quickly, let us know:
- Where the job is, and your postcode
- What’s wrong with the joints now
- How we’d reach the joints
- If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
We quote each job on its own. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details.
Common problems we fix in Howgate
Sealant laid on a wet or dirty joint fails early. Some quick repairs peel off within a season or two.
Common reasons people contact us are:
- Trim joints where the sealant has failed
- Failed sealant on a garage door frame
- Internal damp traced to a gutter joint
- Leaking gutter joints and stop ends
Schools such as Wellington School are buildings too, and movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s.

- Are they insured?
- When the joint can take water or movement
- Whether VAT is included

Howgate buildings and the weather
Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface.
If you live in an older home near Howgate Church, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain.

Should I try it myself first?
Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.
Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
Keeping the joints in good condition
No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. Our tips:
- Keep an eye out for wet patches below a joint
- Check that water runs out of the downpipes
- Get a dropping gutter looked at quickly
- Deal with a drip before winter
A sagging gutter needs its brackets checked. If it drops, the joints will open.
If an end cap is dripping, deal with it before winter. Water down the wall all winter can cause damp inside.
