Gutter sealing in Howes

Gutter sealing in Howes

We seal leaking gutter joints, end caps, fascia and soffit joints plus roofline trims and garage door frames. It’s joint work rather than new guttering. If you have cracked sealant along roofline trims and garage door frames letting rain in, we can help, on uPVC fascias, gutter end caps and soffit joints alike.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Howes depends on the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Tell us how to reach each wall, gutter and roofline.

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job, large or small.

Should I try it myself first?

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

How the visit works

When we arrive, we start by going over the job with you, so you know exactly what we are doing. We protect the surfaces around the joints before any work begins. Most jobs take a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access. Outdoor work around Howes depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. First we trace the drip and check the gutter is not damaged.
  2. We remove the old sealant and clean the joint.
  3. The joint is dried before sealing.
  4. We seal the joint with a sealant made for gutters.
  5. The gutter is checked and debris around the joints cleared.

How to prepare

  • Mention any tricky access
  • Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work
  • Move anything stored near the joints

When to call us in Howes

Debris in the gutter keeps water sitting at the joints. Water that can’t drain works its way through a weak joint and drips through.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Fascia boards with gaps between them
  • Streaks down the brickwork from a leaking joint
  • Dripping gutter ends
  • Trim joints where the sealant has failed

For landlords with property near Annan station, a dripping gutter joint or loose fascia trim is easy to miss until damp shows inside.

Before you book anyone

  • How the joint is cleaned and prepared
  • What product goes in the joint
  • Is the old sealant removed completely?
  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant

10 questions to ask before you book

Howes: your questions answered

Do you work for landlords with property near Annan station?

Yes, we work for letting agents and landlords. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us about the property, and we’ll send you a clear quote.

Is Howes within the area you cover?

Yes, Howes is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Where are you based?

Our base is Crawley, with over 20 years’ experience. Our area covers South East England, London and Scotland.

Can new sealant go over the old?

No. Fresh sealant does not stick to old sealant, and it traps any mould or water underneath. We remove it all first.

How long does the job take?

Most jobs take a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access, including preparation and clearing up. Your quote will say how long we expect yours to take.

Can you seal fascia and soffit joints?

Yes, often alongside gutter joints. Each joint is cleaned and sealed.

What sealant do you use?

Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, picked for each joint. We explain the product when we quote.

When is the sealant fully cured?

That depends on the sealant used, so please follow the time we give you when we finish.

What affects the quote in Howes

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • The size of the job
  • The old material and how stubborn it is
  • Access and height
  • Any mould that needs treating

We do not show prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a quick quote and we’ll talk you through it.

What we need to know

To make quoting easier, please include:

  • If someone has resealed it before
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height

Quotes start with a quick conversation. Describe the problem, the location and the size of the job, and we will talk you through what we’d do. Whenever you’re ready, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Keeping the joints in good condition

A little care helps the new joints last. We recommend:

  • Get a dropping gutter looked at quickly
  • Look at the gutters while it’s raining
  • Look along the fascias for open joints
  • Deal with a drip before winter

Check the joints after heavy rain. Drips are easiest to spot while it’s raining.

Leaking gutter joints get worse over time. Water keeps hitting the same part of the wall and that can cause damp inside.

Outside joints around Howes

Howes is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface.

Homes close to Old Parish Church include some older properties, and old and new materials meet at the roofline and walls, which is where sealant earns its keep. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Annan Academy, its movement joints, gutters and trims need looking after like any other building’s.

Why deal with it now?

Replacing fascias because of open joints is usually unnecessary. Sealing the joints tidies them up as long as the boards are in good condition. Around Howes, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster.

Instead of a standard rate, we look at what your job involves: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. The price is agreed before we begin.
