How we handle gutter sealing in Birch

Gaps along uPVC fascias and soffits look untidy and can let in water and draughts. They’re sealed in a matching colour where possible. If you have water running down the wall below the gutter and earlier gutter repairs that have peeled off, we can put it right, on garage door frames, uPVC fascias and gutter end caps alike.

External sealant needs dry, clean surfaces, so work around Birch is planned for dry weather. Let us know about access to every wall, plus any garages or outbuildings.

A one-year guarantee comes as standard, so you’re covered after we have gone.

Can I do it myself?

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is.

Not every job suits DIY: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas need the right product, the right access and the right method.

How to look after the new joints

Looking after new joints is easy, and it makes a real difference:

  • Do not leave a sagging gutter
  • Do not lean ladders against the gutter itself
  • Clear leaves and moss from the gutters
  • Look for streaks or damp on the wall below gutters

While checking gutters, glance at the fascia joints too. Splits are easier to seal early.

Leaking gutter joints get worse over time. Water keeps hitting the same part of the wall and that can cause damp inside.

Birch buildings and the weather

Compared with the north and west, the South East gets less rain, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind. With historic houses such as Layer Marney Tower (about 1.7 miles south-west) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Birch as well as newer homes. In older buildings, older walls and rooflines need a sealant that moves with them and suits the material.

Letting a property close to Marks Tey station? Then a gutter joint that drips onto the wall can turn into a damp complaint, so it’s worth checking. Homes close to Church of St Peter and St Paul include some older properties, and the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

Do you need gutter sealing in Birch?

A sealant applied to a damp or dirty joint will not bond. Some quick repairs peel off within a season or two for this reason.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Streaks down the brickwork from a leaking joint
  • Damp patches inside below a leaking gutter
  • Quick sealant fixes on gutters that didn’t last
  • Dripping gutter ends

The process

A visit follows a simple pattern: we check the joints, mask and protect the surrounding surfaces, carry out the job and tidy away. It generally takes an hour or two for a few joints, longer for a full run. Somewhere like Birch needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. We bring what the job needs, so it can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. We look at the gutters, fascias and trims and agree the joints to seal.
  2. We clean out each joint.
  3. We make sure everything is dry.
  4. We apply exterior or gutter sealant and finish it neatly.
  5. The joints are checked once sealed.

How to prepare

  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
