Looking after it afterwards

Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. We recommend:

  • Keep harsh solvents off the silicone
  • Stick to mild cleaners on glass
  • Don’t use a blade near the sealant
  • Squeegee the shower screen after each use

Keep the new joints dry for as long as we advise. After that, clean glass with a mild cleaner.

A leaking shower screen may not show at first. It can damage the floor or the ceiling below long before you see it.

Glazing silicone for homes and businesses in Stonymarsh

Glass, frames and walls all move at different rates, and the silicone between them takes the strain. Once it splits or comes away, water finds a way through. We replace it with a glazing silicone that suits the glass and frame. We’re often asked to deal with a quick top-up bead that didn’t last and conservatory leaks at frame and glazing joints, on rooflights, conservatory frames and glass-to-glass joints.

Somewhere as small as Stonymarsh, older homes often have timber frames set in stone or brickwork. Not every older frame suits a modern silicone bead, and sometimes a traditional sand mastic is the better choice.

Big or small, you get the same 12-month guarantee.

Why deal with it now?

Fixing a leaking screen early protects what’s underneath. Water from a failed joint can soak into the floor before you notice. Where a wall is exposed, as many are in small places like Stonymarsh, wind-driven rain gets into any failed joint, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

A few things move the cost up or down: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

Do you need glazing silicone in Stonymarsh?

Using a sealant not made for glass causes many failures. Not every silicone sticks properly to glass, and acetoxy types can attack some frame materials.

Most people get in touch when they notice one of these:

  • Cracked silicone between glass panels
  • New silicone smeared over old sealant
  • Water tracking down the inner face of the glass
  • Silicone pulling away from the glass

Rented homes near Mottisfont & Dunbridge station change hands often, and leaking glazing joints, shower screens or conservatory seals are worth sorting between tenancies.

Questions to ask before you book

Do you seal glass balustrade bases?

What information do you need?

Only a few details: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. After that, simply phone 0345 464 0079 or email us.

What sealant do you use on glazing?

We pick a glazing silicone to suit the materials. Neutral-cure products suit most glass and frames, as some acetoxy types can attack certain metals.

Is it worth trying it myself?

Some simple jobs can be done by a careful DIYer. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.

When it isn’t the sealant

New sealant cannot fix everything, and we will tell you before any work starts. It won’t solve:

  • A sagging or failing conservatory roof
  • A broken pane or roof panel
  • Failed flashing around a conservatory

Not sure which it is? You can phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you honestly.

Glazing silicone in Stonymarsh: local notes

Historic houses like Mottisfont Abbey (about 0.5 miles west) are a reminder that the area around Stonymarsh has older buildings as well as new. Where a home is older, older frames set in brick or stone need a sealant that suits them, and sometimes that’s traditional sand mastic. Rainfall in the South East is lower than in much of the UK, though outdoor sealant still has to go onto a dry joint, so the forecast decides the day.

In the older streets around Church of St Andrew, replacement windows fitted into old openings often leave uneven gaps that need backing and a flexible joint.

What we do, step by step

At the end, we look at the finished work together. The visit itself normally takes a few hours, depending on how many joints need doing, depending on the size of the job. For a village or hamlet like Stonymarsh, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. We bring what the job needs, so it can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. We look at the glazing and agree which joints need resealing.
  2. We cut away the failed silicone.
  3. The surfaces are cleaned with a suitable solvent.
  4. We apply and tool the new silicone.
  5. The joints are checked before we leave.

DIY versus a professional finish

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

Different surfaces, different methods

Shower screens

Black or peeling silicone on a screen lets water out. Cutting it out and resealing fixes it.

Glass balustrade bases

We reseal the joint where the glass meets the base channel. We do not install or replace glass.
