Glazing silicone in Newport

Glazing silicone in Newport, done properly

A frameless shower screen depends on its silicone. Leaks normally come from the wall joint or the tray joint and both get fresh anti-fungal silicone. Typical jobs include glass-to-glass joints that have split and leaks from the base of a shower screen, on conservatory frames, glass-to-frame joints and glass balustrade bases.

Newport mixes older streets, where windows have often been replaced, with newer estates fitted with uPVC. In every case, the joint between frame and wall is what keeps water out.

All our work comes with our 12-month guarantee, wherever you are in the Isle of Wight.

How it works

A visit follows a simple pattern: we check the joints, mask and protect the surrounding surfaces, do the work and tidy away. Most jobs take a few hours for most jobs. Parking in a town like Newport is normally straightforward, but tell us if there’s a driveway or any restrictions, and mention if the work is upstairs, in a flat or high on the outside.

  1. First we agree the joints to be done.
  2. Old sealant is removed from the glass and frame.
  3. The surfaces are cleaned with a suitable solvent.
  4. New glazing silicone goes in and is finished neatly.
  5. The joints are checked before we leave.

Preparing for the visit

  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
  • Clear the area around the work

Why act early in Newport

Dealing with a leaking shower screen early protects the floor and ceiling. A small leak can reach the floor below before it shows. In Newport, as anywhere, most leaks start as a small gap in a joint, and early is when they’re cheapest and quickest to sort.

The cost reflects the work involved, not a rough estimate. That’s why we ask a few questions first and agree the price before starting.

Is glazing silicone in Newport guaranteed?

Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee, wherever it is. We are fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

What sealant do you use?

The product depends on the job: anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas, and other sealants where joints move or face the weather. Brands we use include Arbo and Everbuild.

Where are you based?

Yes, we do these often. The screen is resealed with anti-fungal silicone made for wet areas.

Newport homes and the weather

Compared with the north and west, the South East gets less rain, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind. With historic houses such as Carisbrooke Castle (about 1 mile south-west) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Newport as well as newer homes. Where a home is older, older timber frames in brick or stone need a different approach from a modern uPVC window.

If you look after a building such as Nine Acres Primary School, larger buildings have plenty of frames, and the mastic around each one ages. Carisbrooke Castle, about 1 mile south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Newport.

How we quote for glazing silicone

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:

  • The size of the job
  • The product the joint needs
  • Access and height
  • How many areas need sealing

Leaving a failed joint normally makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re unsure, ring 0345 464 0079 or email us for an honest opinion and a quote.

What to tell us for a quote

Photos help, but a description is a good start. Try to tell us:

  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
  • What’s wrong with the joints now

We don’t publish a price list. Instead, your job gets its own clear quote. To arrange one, call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email.

Honest limits

Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what new sealant will not do:

  • A sagging or failing conservatory roof
  • A sealed unit that has misted inside
  • Water coming through the roof rather than a sealant joint

If you’re not sure, just call 0345 464 0079 or email us and we will give you a straight answer.

Where we work in Newport

  • Rooflights
  • Conservatory frames
  • Glass balustrade bases
  • Glass-to-glass joints
  • Glass-to-frame joints
  • Shower screens

Looking after it afterwards

Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. We recommend:

  • Wipe the screen down after showering
  • Check the silicone on glass every year or so
  • Open vents or windows to let moisture out
  • Keep conservatory gutters clear of leaves

Avoid scraping near the new silicone when cleaning the glass. A soft cloth or sponge is best.

Shower screen leaks can go unnoticed. Water can soak into the floor or reach the room below long before you see it.

Can I do it myself?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

How the job changes by surface

Glass-to-frame joints

Where glass sits in a frame, silicone keeps water out. When it splits, water can get into the frame.

Shower screens

Black or peeling silicone on a screen lets water out. Cutting it out and resealing fixes it.
