Glazing silicone in Minard, done properly

We work across Minard on glazing joints for homes and businesses. Conservatories, rooflights, glass panels and shower screens are all part of the job, with a sealant chosen for the joint. If you’re dealing with glazing silicone that has cracked or come away and new silicone smeared over old sealant, we can help.

Common problems we fix in Minard

The wrong sealant is a common cause. Not every silicone sticks properly to glass, and acetoxy types can attack some frame materials.

Look out for any of the following:

  • Stained, discoloured glazing silicone
  • Split or lifting silicone on glass
  • Failed joints on frameless glass
  • Water tracking down the inner face of the glass

Whether the job is in Minard itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

DIY versus a professional finish

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

Some jobs are best left to a professional: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas call for the right materials, safe access and experience.

Glazing silicone in Minard: local notes

Minard is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That is hard on glazing joints and frame seals, especially on the side facing the sea. The west of Scotland is wetter than the east, so there’s plenty of rain for glazing joints and frame seals to keep out.

In and around Minard, as anywhere, good glazing silicone starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Rooflights

Rooflight leaks can come from the sealant or the roof. We check which it is.

Shower screens

Most shower screen leaks come from the wall or tray joint. Both are resealed with anti-fungal silicone.

Aftercare tips

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Keep harsh solvents off the silicone
  • Open vents or windows to let moisture out
  • Run a squeegee over the glass when you are done
  • Act on drips or damp patches early

Gentle products are best near the sealant. Strong solvents can soften or mark it.

Act on black or lifting silicone early. Peeling silicone lets water in behind and the leak gets worse.

FAQs for Minard

Does living near the coast affect glazing silicone in Minard?

Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. Walls facing the sea are normally the first to need attention.

Can you do glazing silicone in Minard?

Yes, Minard is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.

What information do you need?

Just the basics: where it is, what you’ve noticed and how we reach it. Then send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Is it possible to redo the silicone on a shower screen?

Yes, we do these often. The screen is resealed with anti-fungal silicone suited to bathrooms.

Where do you work from?

Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. Our applicators cover Minard.

Can you just put new silicone over the old?

A top-up rarely holds. Fresh silicone will not bond to cured silicone so we take it all out and start clean.

Do you seal glass balustrade bases?

Yes. The old sealant is removed and the joint resealed using a sealant that suits the materials.

Can you replace a misted double-glazed unit?

That’s not something we do. Misting between panes means the sealed unit has failed and needs replacing by a glazier.

What happens if it’s left?

Glazing joints need a sealant made for the job. A general-purpose tube may not bond well or may react with the frame, so we use neutral-cure glazing silicone. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

Homes and businesses are quoted the same way: the amount of work, the access and the products needed, along with when we can work on site. Call for a quick quote and we will go through it with you.

The process

On the day, there’s very little for you to do. Show us the job and we will take it from there. The job generally takes a few hours for most jobs from start to finish. For a place like Minard, longer drives are planned in advance. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. We find where water is getting in and check whether it’s a sealant joint.
  2. The old sealant is removed from the glass and frame without scratching them.
  3. The glass and frame are cleaned and degreased.
  4. We apply a neutral-cure glazing silicone and tool it smooth.
  5. The finished joints are checked and, where it’s safe, tested with water.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks
  • Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
