Glazing silicone for Comrie homes and businesses

Glazing silicone in Comrie: local notes

Comrie is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That is hard on glazing joints and frame seals, especially on the side facing the sea. Many older homes in Scotland have sash and case windows, and the joint between the box frame and the stone or render is traditionally pointed with sand mastic.

Around Comrie, as everywhere, glazing silicone is only as good as the preparation behind it.

About our glazing silicone in Comrie

Glass and frames expand and contract differently, so the sealant between them does a lot of work. When it cracks or lets go, water gets in. We cut it out and reseal with a glazing silicone suited to the joint. We are often asked to deal with shower screens leaking along the wall or tray and leaks where conservatory glass meets the frame, on shower screens, glass-to-frame joints and glass balustrade bases.

Older stone-built homes in Scotland often have sash and case or timber windows set in stone. Those suit a traditional sand mastic or a neutral-cure sealant, not an acetoxy silicone that can attack some stone.

All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months.

Comrie: your questions answered

Is glazing silicone in a coastal place like Comrie any different?

Near the sea, outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland, so preparation and the right sealant matter all the more. Walls facing the sea are usually the first to need attention.

Will you come out to Comrie?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

What sealant do you use?

Quality sealants from brands including Arbo and Everbuild, chosen to suit the joint. We will tell you what we’re using and why.

Can a conservatory leak be sealed?

Often, if the leak is at a sealant joint. We find where the water gets in first before any sealing.

Are you insured?

Yes. We are fully insured for every job we do.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Only a few details: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. After that, simply drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Do you offer different sealant colours?

Most of the time, yes. We’ll tell you which colours the right product comes in and agree one before we start.

Can I do it myself?

Sometimes. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. If it doesn’t work out, we can redo it.

Why act early in Comrie

Glazing joints need a sealant made for the job. A general-purpose tube may not bond well or may react with the frame so we choose a glazing silicone instead. In a place like Comrie, small leaks are easy to put off, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting. If you’re unsure, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Quotes for glazing silicone in Comrie

Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • Any working-time requirements on site
  • Any mould that needs treating
  • The product the joint needs
  • The amount of work

We do not show prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a quick quote and we’ll talk you through it.

Helping us quote

Photos help, but a description is a good start. Please mention:

  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • What’s wrong with the joints now
  • The address or postcode of the job

Call for a quick quote, or send an email if you’d rather. Describe what needs sealing and we’ll talk you through the work before giving you a price.

When to call us in Comrie

UV light ages silicone and roof joints get the most sun. It goes brittle, cracks and stops sticking on the glass.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Failed joints on frameless glass
  • Mouldy sealant around glass panels
  • Leaks where conservatory glass meets the frame
  • Shower screens leaking along the wall or tray

Homes close to Church of The Most Holy Name include some older properties, and the windows may be timber, sash or later replacements, and each needs the right sealant against the wall.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether you can choose the colour
  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • Whether VAT is included
  • How the surfaces are prepared before sealing

How to choose a mastic man

Should I try it myself first?

Not every job suits DIY: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs need the right product, the right access and the right method.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

When something else is needed

A few problems are outside what sealant work can do:

  • Cracked or broken glass
  • Structural problems with a conservatory roof
  • Condensation trapped between two panes

If you are not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

What we seal

  • Rooflights
  • Conservatory frames
  • Glass-to-glass joints
  • Glass balustrade bases

  • Shower screens

What we do, step by step

A visit follows a simple pattern: we look at the joints together, protect the area around them, do the work and clear up. It normally takes anything from an hour or two to most of a day, depending on the size of the job. Somewhere like Comrie may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. First we agree the joints to be done.
  2. We cut away the failed silicone.
  3. We clean and prepare the joint.
  4. New glazing silicone goes in and is finished neatly.
  5. The joints are checked before we leave.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking rules near the property
  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed
  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can

Looking after it afterwards

Looking after new joints is easy, and it makes a real difference:

  • Inspect the sealant on glazing annually
  • Avoid scraping close to the bead
  • Get a new leak looked at quickly
  • Keep harsh solvents off the silicone

Follow the cure time we give you before the joints get wet. From then on, a mild glass cleaner is all it needs.

Do not leave lifting or mouldy silicone on glazing. Peeling silicone lets water in behind and the leak gets worse.
