Floor joint sealing in Firth

Floor joint sealing in Firth

We seal floor joints in homes, offices and commercial buildings across Firth. We start by checking the floor type and the joint, since that decides which sealant suits. We work on thresholds, tiled floors and concrete floor joints, and the jobs we see most are failed seals where bathroom floors meet baths and panels and cracked caulk along skirting in bathrooms and kitchens.

Timber frame is common in newer Scottish homes, and it settles over the first years, which shows as gaps at skirtings and floor joints. Older stone-built homes, meanwhile, often have timber floors that move with the seasons.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we’ll sort it.

Skirting boards

On painted skirting, we can use a flexible sealant that takes paint. Where water is involved, silicone is the better choice.

Thresholds

Threshold joints get a lot of feet, so the sealant has to be tough as well as flexible and tool it flush.

Why it’s worth doing now in Firth

Floor joints left open collect dirt that’s hard to clean out and makes the floor look worn. A neat sealed joint is easier to clean and finishes the floor. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

Leaving a failed joint generally makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re not sure whether it needs doing, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Why us?

  • White, clear, grey or another colour, product permitting
  • 20+ years of sealant experience
  • Arbo and Everbuild products
  • We leave the area clean and tidy

What we can’t put right

Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:

  • Bouncy or failing floorboards
  • Movement too big for a sealant joint
  • Loose, hollow or cracked tiles, which need a tiler

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Floor joint sealing around Firth

Work on the islands has to be planned around ferry crossings and the weather, so the more notice, the better. Many new homes in Scotland are timber-framed, so skirting and sealant joints can open up as the building settles.

For jobs in and around Firth, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish. Around Firth, as everywhere, floor joint sealing is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Firth is in the Shetland Islands. Every kind of property in Firth is covered for floor joint sealing, old or new, large or small. The work is guaranteed for a year. Our the Shetland Islands coverage runs to 63 places, and Firth is one of them.

Work in ZE2 is quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. You’ll find streets such as Midlea, Leaside and Sandside, and we cover them all. If you’re just outside Firth, we cover Mossbank (1 mile north-east), Scatsta (4 miles west), Vidlin (6 miles south), Sullom (6 miles west) and Burravoe (6 miles north-east). If you are somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed.

Landlords, agents and businesses in Firth

Water getting past a failed joint can damage the building, which matters even more when someone else lives there. Resealing at the right time is simple maintenance that we can handle for you.

We regularly work with letting and managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and the access arrangements and we will quote.

Firth questions

Is floor joint sealing in Firth guaranteed?

Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee, wherever it is. We are fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Will you come out to Firth?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across all of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Do you seal kitchen plinths to the floor?

Yes. Where a floor meets a bath panel, kitchen plinth or skirting in a wet area, we use a flexible silicone to keep mop water out.

Can I choose the sealant colour?

We will suggest a colour to suit the surroundings, from white and clear to greys and other shades. The choice depends on the product the joint needs.

Do I have to be there?

For indoor joints, yes, someone needs to let us in. Once we’ve agreed the job, you do not need to watch us work.

Can you quote for more than one area?

Yes. More than one area can be quoted together.

How long does the job take?

Typically it takes a few hours, depending on the length of joint. Larger jobs naturally take longer, and we’ll tell you how long to expect.

Will there be a smell?

That depends on the sealant. Some smell for a while, some hardly at all.

What affects the cost of floor joint sealing

There’s no set price list. What we look at:

  • How easy the joints are to reach
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • How much there is to do
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out

What it costs depends on the size of the job, how hard the old material is to remove and how easy the joints are to reach. You will have a clear quote before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

Asking for a quote

What to tell us when you ask for a quote:

  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • Roughly how big the job is
  • Whether it has been sealed before

There’s no standard price list, because every job is different. Instead, your job gets its own clear quote. To arrange one, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

How the visit works

You do not need to clear the whole room or building, just the space around the work. We protect the rest, and the work takes a morning or an afternoon for most homes in most cases. Somewhere like Firth may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. First we check the joint and the floor and agree which sealant suits it.
  2. Whatever is in the joint now, whether caulk, grout or sealant, comes out.
  3. We clean and vacuum the joint and fit backing where the depth needs setting.
  4. A flexible sealant, or a floor-joint sealant for concrete, is applied in a colour to suit.
  5. We tool the joint neatly and tell you when it can be walked on and cleaned.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep children and pets away from the work area
  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in

Ask for a quote

Looking after it afterwards

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Keep dirt out of the joints
  • Use a well-wrung mop rather than flooding the floor
  • Get cracks along tile grout lines looked at early
  • Lift furniture rather than dragging it across joints

Check the joints after the first winter. If anything has opened, it’s easy to reseal.

Once concrete joint edges start to break, wheels make it worse. Sealing them early protects the edges and the surface smoother.
