Need fire rated sealant in Whitehall?

What the job involves on each surface

Masonry and concrete

Holes through concrete and block are rarely neat. We check the gap size around the service to make sure it suits the product.

Linear gaps

A linear joint may need to allow for movement as well as fire. The product and depth are chosen to suit both.

Fire rated sealant in Whitehall

Fire stopping only performs as intended if it’s done to the detail: correct depth, correct backing and a product suited to the surfaces. That detail is what we take care over, gap by gap. Typical jobs include unsealed gaps around fire door frames and gaps around pipes and cables through fire-resisting walls, across service penetrations, flats & HMOs and pipe & cable gaps.

For holiday lets, converted business premises or a community building near Whitehall, washroom and kitchen sealant and any fire-rated joints need the same attention as anywhere.

You’re covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything isn’t right with it, call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email.

What we do, step by step

On the day, there’s very little for you to do. Show us the job and we’ll take it from there. The work itself takes a few hours for a handful of gaps, and longer for a whole building from start to finish. In a small place like Whitehall, access is generally the main thing to plan. If the job is outside, mention outbuildings, exposed walls and how to reach them.

  1. We plan the order of work and access, floor by floor or flat by flat.
  2. Old, damaged or unsuitable sealant is removed.
  3. Gaps are cleaned of dust and loose material.
  4. The fire-rated or intumescent sealant is applied and tooled to the tested detail.
  5. We record what was done and flag anything that needs a different system.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed
  • Mention any tricky access
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints

Should I try it myself first?

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.

Commercial buildings in Whitehall

Workplaces and the common parts of blocks of flats in England need a fire risk assessment under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which is often where open fire-stopping gaps are first noticed. We work to the specification you are given, installing the product to its tested details.

If you let a flat or house near Billingshurst station, any gap left by new services in shared walls should be closed with a fire-rated product. Managing a site like Shipley CofE Primary School? Then gaps opened by contractors for new cabling are a common finding in schools and offices.

Whitehall: your questions answered

Will you come out to Whitehall?

Yes, Whitehall is covered. Our work covers London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Can you help a landlord with a rental near Billingshurst station?

Yes. We work for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners. Just call 0345 464 0079 or email us with the address and what needs doing, and we’ll send you a clear quote.

Can you quote for more than one area?

Yes. Just list everything you need and we’ll quote it together.

Do I need to be at home?

That depends on where the joints are. For work indoors, someone needs to let us in, and for outside work we will agree access with you when we book.

How do I get a quote for fire rated sealant in Whitehall?

It depends on the job, so we quote each one individually. For a quick quote, call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email with a short description of the job.

Where are you based?

Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. We cover Whitehall and the rest of West Sussex.

Do you carry out fire risk assessments?

No. We follow the requirements from your assessor, designer or building control and install to the manufacturer’s details.

Do you provide details of the products used?

Yes. Locations and products are written up when we finish. If you need pictures or a set layout, ask when you get a quote.

When to call us in Whitehall

Gaps also open up as buildings move: a seal that cracks or pulls away leaves a path for smoke. Knocks, maintenance and building work damage it further.

If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:

  • Sealant items on a fire risk assessment action list
  • Fire seals that have cracked with movement
  • Unsealed gaps around fire door frames
  • Gaps left after a refit or conversion

If you look after a church, hall or community building such as The Church of St Mary the Virgin, gaps around pipes and cables are worth checking after any building work there.

10 questions to ask before booking

Looking after it afterwards

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Do not fill fire-stopping gaps with ordinary foam or silicone
  • Keep the record of products and locations with your fire safety documents
  • Report cracked or damaged seals as soon as you notice them
  • Photograph sealed gaps before they’re covered up

Keep the record we give you with the building’s fire safety documents. It helps whoever checks the building next.

Open gaps don’t only matter in a fire: they also let noise, draughts and sometimes pests through. Dealing with them early helps with all of these.

What we cannot put right

We will not take on work that will not last, so these are the limits:

  • Assessing a building’s fire safety
  • Fire doors that need new seals, closers or hardware
  • Big openings where sealant alone isn’t the tested solution

If you are not sure, just phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Door frames
  • Linear gaps
  • Service penetrations
  • Plasterboard & masonry
  • Pipe & cable gaps
  • Flats & HMOs

What happens if it’s left?

An unsealed gap lets smoke and fire get round a wall that was built to hold them back. Sealing it properly restores what the wall was there to do, and the sealing itself is often a contained piece of work. Where a wall is exposed, as many are in small places like Whitehall, wind-driven rain gets into any failed joint, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

Instead of a standard rate, we look at what your job involves: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. The price is agreed before we begin.
