The process

We bring everything the job needs with us. Once we have agreed what’s being done, the area is protected and the work begins. Most jobs take anything from a few hours to several days, depending on how many gaps there are. Outdoor work around A' Chrìon Làraich depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We plan the order of work and access, floor by floor or flat by flat.
  2. Old, damaged or unsuitable sealant is removed.
  3. Gaps are cleaned of dust and loose material.
  4. The fire-rated or intumescent sealant is applied and tooled to the tested detail.
  5. We record what was done and flag anything that needs a different system.

Fire rated sealant in A' Chrìon Làraich, done properly

A gap around a door frame, a linear joint at the head of a wall and a hole round a pipe are each sealed differently. We check the size and the substrate before choosing the product, then apply it to the depth its tested detail calls for. We are often asked to deal with gaps where walls meet ceilings or slabs and seals cut through by electricians, plumbers or data installers, across flats & HMOs, service penetrations and linear gaps.

If you look after holiday lets, a guest house or a community building in or near A' Chrìon Làraich, the washrooms and kitchens need the same care as any city building, and fire-rated joints should be kept in good order.

Each job carries a 12-month guarantee.

FAQs for A' Chrìon Làraich

How do Scotland’s building regulations apply to fire-rated sealant in A' Chrìon Làraich?

Scotland has its own building regulations, the Building (Scotland) Regulations, with their own technical handbooks. Whatever the rules, fire-rated sealant has to be installed to the manufacturer’s tested details, and that’s how we fit it. We don’t certify buildings or carry out fire risk assessments, so your fire risk assessor or building control will advise on what’s needed.

Can you help a landlord with a rental near Crianlarich station?

Yes, we work for landlords and agents. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with the address and a few details, and we’ll give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Do you take on fire stopping in schools and offices?

Yes. We work in flats, HMOs, schools, offices and other commercial buildings, including occupied ones. We agree access and the order of work with you first.

What should I tell you?

Just the basics: where it is, what you’ve noticed and how we reach it. After that, simply send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. We are fully insured for domestic and commercial work.

Can I use normal mastic around a pipe through a fire wall?

No. It looks sealed but will not perform as fire stopping. A tested fire-rated product is needed.

Will you leave a mess?

No. We protect the surfaces around the joints, and we tidy up before we go.

What’s the difference between intumescent and fire-rated sealant?

Intumescent describes a material that swells in heat. Intumescent sealants are a type of fire-rated sealant and which one is used depends on the job.

Should I try it myself first?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

When something else is needed

Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t solve:

  • Openings too large for sealant, which need batts, boards or another system
  • Fire doors that need new seals, closers or hardware
  • A wall that isn’t a fire-resisting element to begin with

Not sure which it is? You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly.

Why it’s worth doing now in A' Chrìon Làraich

Doing it once, properly, beats doing it twice. Work that doesn’t follow the tested detail may have to come out again once someone inspects it. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

Every job is a little different, so we quote each one individually. Size, access and the product the joint needs all make a difference.

  • New service routes left unsealed after building work

Our hiring checklist

Keeping the joints in good condition

Good habits help new joints last longer. Our tips:

  • Ask which product was used before you paint
  • Report cracked or damaged seals as soon as you notice them
  • Keep the record of products and locations with your fire safety documents
  • Ask every contractor to reseal any fire stopping they disturb

Do not drill through or remove a fire seal without putting it back properly. New services through a sealed wall should include fire stopping in the plan.

Any job that breaks through a wall or ceiling should include resealing. Catching it then saves a separate visit later.
