Ripe External Mastic
Sealing brickwork movement joints, render, cladding and façade joints for Ripe, backed by a one-year guarantee. Call for a quick quote.
- Failed sealant between panels on a façade
- Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
- Weathered mastic that no longer stretches
Aftercare tips
A little care helps the new joints last. We recommend:
- Have failed joints looked at early
- Look over the joints every year, ideally after winter
- Deal with leaking gutters that soak the joints below
- Leave the joints unpainted unless we’ve said otherwise
Follow the cure time we give you before the joint is knocked or disturbed. Most exterior sealants skin fast but take longer to cure right through.
Gaps, plants or missing sealant in a joint are worth getting looked at. Earlier resealing means a smaller job and a better result.
External mastic in Ripe, done properly
We’re ARBOMaster approved applicators, and each external joint gets a sealant suited to it. Some surfaces need a primer before sealing and we use one wherever it does. If you have leaking joints around cladding and façade panels and joints pointed up with cement by mistake, we can put it right, whatever the surface.
Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Ripe is booked around the forecast. Tell us about access to all sides of the building, including outbuildings and garages.
A one-year guarantee comes with the work, just as it does everywhere we cover.

What we’re called out for in Ripe
Many joints fail because they were sealed too deep or with nothing behind them. If the sealant sticks to the back as well as the sides, it can’t stretch and rips as the joint opens.
People generally contact us after spotting something like this:
- Plants rooting in failed movement joints
- Gaps where render, brick and frames meet
- Movement joints filled with mortar instead of sealant
- Joints with sealant missing in places
For an older house near a landmark such as The Parish Church of St John the Baptist, old and new materials meet at the roofline and walls, which is where sealant earns its keep.
Before you book anyone
- When the joint can take water or movement
- How the surfaces are prepared before sealing
- Are they insured?
- Whether you can choose the colour
What we can’t put right
In fairness, some problems need a different trade:
- Cutting new joints into brickwork, which is building work rather than sealant work
- Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
- Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
If you are not sure, just call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer.
What we seal

Outside joints around Ripe
Historic houses like Charleston Farmhouse (about 2.3 miles south-west) are a reminder that the area around Ripe has older buildings as well as new. In older buildings, older walls and rooflines need a sealant that moves with them and suits the material. London and the South East are among the drier parts of the UK, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind.
Rented homes near Berwick (Sussex) station change hands often, and split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside.

How the visit works
Once we’re on site, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. Most jobs then take anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. In a small place like Ripe, access is normally the main thing to plan. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.
- We look at every joint and agree a colour to suit the wall.
- Failed sealant is removed back to clean, sound faces.
- Closed-cell backing rod is pushed in so the sealant bonds to two sides only.
- We prime the faces where required.
- A low-modulus exterior sealant is gunned in and tooled to a neat finish.

Should I try it myself first?
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.
Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

What the job involves on each surface
Cladding and façade panels
If the façade has a specified sealant, that is what we use. Send us any details you have about the façade.
Brickwork movement joints
Brick moves with heat and moisture, and grows a little over time. The movement joint takes that up, so its sealant has to stay flexible.
Why deal with it now?
Sealing over the top of old mastic doesn’t hold for long. The new layer cannot bond properly to old, weathered material, so the old joint is cut out fully first. Where a wall is exposed, as many are in small places like Ripe, wind-driven rain gets into any failed joint, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Some things make a job bigger or smaller: the old material and how easily it comes out, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

Questions from Ripe
Do you cover Ripe for external mastic?
Yes. We work across London and the South East, and Ripe is part of that. You can call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and let us know what needs doing, and we will give you a clear price.
I let a flat near Berwick (Sussex) station. Can you help?
Yes, rental work is part of what we do. Just ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and tell us about the property, and we will give you a clear quote.
Do you hold any approvals?
Yes. Mr Mastic is an ARBOMaster approved applicator.
Do I need to be at home?
If the work is inside, we need someone to let us in. After that, you can carry on with your day.
Can a movement joint be filled with mortar?
No. Rigid materials cannot move with the wall. Where a joint has been mortared, it can often be raked out and sealed properly.
What is backing rod for?
Backing rod controls the sealant depth and keeps it off the back of the joint. That way it bonds to the two sides only and can stretch.
Do you remove the old sealant?
Always. Sealing over old sealant is the main reason resealing fails early, and it’s something we never do.
What colours does the sealant come in?
There’s a good range of exterior colours, including greys, browns, whites and stone tones. We pick the one that suits your wall best.
