External mastic for homes and businesses in Nettlebed
Joints between dissimilar materials, like brick against render or concrete against a steel frame, see movement from both sides. A flexible sealant bridges the two. If you have cracked joints where brick meets render or frames and damp patches traced to an open external joint, we can help, on concrete & block, brickwork movement joints and façade panels alike.
Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Nettlebed is booked around the forecast. Tell us about access to all sides of the building, including outbuildings and garages.
There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job, large or small.

What happens on the day
At the end, we look at the finished work together and tell you how long to leave it. The visit itself normally takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access, depending on the amount of work. Somewhere as small as Nettlebed, access is often the only tricky part. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.
- First we look over the joints with you, agree which to renew and talk through access.
- The old mastic and anything lodged in the joint is removed.
- Both sides are cleaned back to sound material and primed if needed.
- We push in closed-cell backing rod so the sealant is the right depth and bonds to the sides only.
- The new sealant, chosen to suit the brick or render, is applied and tooled to a neat finish.
Preparing for the visit
- Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
- For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
- Keep children and pets away from the work area

Aftercare tips
After the cure time, these simple habits help:
- Check the sealant is paintable before painting near it
- Make sure movement joints are not pointed over
- Keep soil, plants and ivy away from the joints
- Fix overflowing gutters above sealed joints
Don’t paint over the new sealant unless we have said the product is paintable. Many exterior sealants are not designed to be painted and spoil the finish.
If you can see gaps, plants or bare sections in a joint, have it checked. Earlier resealing means a smaller job and a better result.
Common problems we fix in Nettlebed
If plants are growing out of a joint, the sealant has generally failed or was never there. Roots and dirt hold water against the wall.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Weeds or debris growing in open joints
- Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
- Rigid filler in a joint that should flex
- Weathered mastic that no longer stretches
Homes close to Church of St Bartholomew include some older properties, and older walls, gutters and the joints where extensions meet them need a flexible sealant.
What to look for in a quote
- When the joint can take water or movement
- Which colour the sealant will be
- What happens if the job turns out different
- Whether the sealant suits the joint
Walls and rooflines in Nettlebed
Rainfall in the South East is lower than in much of the UK, but outside sealant still needs a dry, clean surface, so outdoor work is planned around the forecast. Historic houses like Greys Court (about 2.7 miles south-east) are a reminder that the area around Nettlebed has older buildings as well as new. In older buildings, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth.
If you look after a building such as Nettlebed Community School, movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s.

What happens if it’s left?
A properly done movement joint is an even line in a colour that suits the wall. A hurried job with smeared edges and no backing looks worse and fails sooner so it’s worth doing right. Around Nettlebed, older homes often have timber in their floors and frames, where water from a failed joint can cause rot if it’s left.
We don’t show prices on the website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. Call for a quick quote and we will talk you through it.

Common questions in Nettlebed
Is external mastic in Nettlebed guaranteed?
All our work, in Nettlebed and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We’re fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.
Is Nettlebed within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
What sealant do you use?
Each joint gets the product that suits it. Where it moves, gets wet or faces the weather makes a difference, and we will explain our choice.
I’m a tenant. Can you help?
Yes, though it’s best to check with your landlord first. Landlords are often happy for the work to be arranged.
How long does external mastic take?
As a guide, most jobs take anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. Bigger jobs take longer.
Is it OK to fill a movement joint with cement?
No. Cement or mortar cannot stretch and the joint fails. If it has already been filled, we can normally cut it out and reseal it.
Can I add another job to the visit?
Yes, we can. Several rooms, windows or areas can go on one quote.
Do the sealants smell?
There can be a smell while the sealant cures, but it fades. Opening a window helps.
What sealant work can’t fix
We’d rather tell you now than do work that will not last, so here’s what sealant cannot put right:
- Subsidence or other structural problems
- Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
- Cracking across the wall rather than at a joint
Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will tell you honestly before booking.

DIY sealant or a professional job?
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.
Not every job suits DIY: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs call for the right materials, safe access and experience.
What affects the quote in Nettlebed
Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:
- Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
- Whether there’s mould to deal with
- Any working-time requirements on site
- The type of sealant required
A few things move the cost up or down: the old material and how easily it comes out, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.
What to tell us for a quote
When you call or email, these details help:
- Photos by email, if that’s easy
- Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
- Whether it has been sealed before
- Where the property is
Quotes start with a quick conversation. Describe the problem, the location and the size of the job, and we’ll explain how we’d tackle it. When it suits you, phone 0345 464 0079 or email us.
