Netherfield External Mastic
Problem with your movement joints in Netherfield? We remove the old material, prepare the joints and seal them properly.
- Sealant pulling away from one side of the joint
- Rigid filler in a joint that should flex
- Rain getting behind render or cladding at a joint
External mastic in Netherfield, done properly
Failed sealant is cut out, the depth set with closed-cell backing rod, and the joint resealed with a low-modulus sealant made for outside. The colour is chosen to suit the brick or render. If you’re dealing with rain getting behind render or cladding at a joint and joints pointed up with cement by mistake, we can put it right.
Somewhere as small as Netherfield, homes and farm buildings often face open ground, so walls and rooflines take the full force of wind and rain. Gutter joints and wall joints there need a sealant that can flex and stay put.
A 12-month guarantee comes as standard, so you are covered after we have gone.

Looking after it afterwards
Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:
- Have failed joints looked at early
- Look over the joints every year, ideally after winter
- Check the sealant is paintable before painting near it
- Clear growth from the base of walls and joints
Only paint over the joint if we’ve confirmed the sealant can take paint. Paint can crack on a flexible joint and spoil the finish.
An open movement joint lets rain into the wall every time it pours. Over time it can mean damp inside, stained render or frost-damaged brick.
How the visit works
Every visit runs the same way: we look at the joints together, protect the area around them, carry out the job and clear up. It generally takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. Somewhere as small as Netherfield, access is often the only tricky part. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.
- Each joint is checked and the colour of the new sealant agreed.
- Failed sealant is removed back to clean, sound faces.
- Closed-cell backing rod is pushed in so the sealant bonds to two sides only.
- We prime the faces where required.
- A low-modulus exterior sealant is gunned in and tooled to a neat finish.
Getting ready for the visit
- Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed
- Mention any parking rules near the property
- Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit

Outside joints around Netherfield
The South East is one of the drier parts of the UK, but outside sealant still needs a dry, clean surface, so outdoor work is planned around the forecast. With historic houses such as Durhamford Manor (about 3.3 miles east) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Netherfield as well as newer homes. In older buildings, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth.
Schools such as Netherfield CofE Primary School are buildings too, and movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s. Rented homes near Battle station change hands often, and outside joints that have cracked can let damp into a rental, so check them between lets.

What we can’t put right
It helps to know what we cannot do:
- Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
- Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
- Movement that’s more than a sealant joint can take

Netherfield: your questions answered
Do you cover Netherfield for external mastic?
Yes. We work across London and the South East, and Netherfield is part of that. You can phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and let us know what needs doing, and we will send you a clear quote.
Do you work for landlords with property near Battle station?
Yes. We work for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners, and several properties can go on one quote. Just phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email with the address and what needs doing, and we’ll give you a clear quote.
Where are you based?
We’re a Crawley-based firm. Our area covers South East England, London and Scotland.
Is it messy?
Tidy work is part of the job. Nearby surfaces are protected, and we clear up when we are done.
When is the sealant fully cured?
It depends on the product. We tell you how long to leave it before we go.
Should I try DIY first?
You can, for simple jobs. The key is preparation: remove all the old material and work on a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.
Do you seal joints where cladding meets other materials?
Yes. Where different materials meet is one of the most common joints we seal. The sealant is chosen to bond to both sides, primed where needed.
When will the joints need doing again?
That varies with the weather the wall faces, how much it moves and the sealant used. Sealant is a maintenance item, so check the joints once a year and renew it when it starts to fail.
Can I do it myself?
If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.
Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.
Signs you need external mastic in Netherfield
The wrong product in a moving joint is a classic cause. A high-modulus or general-purpose sealant can be too rigid for a busy joint, so it pulls away from the edges.
The most common problems we see are:
- Panel joints letting water in
- Damp patches traced to an open external joint
- Weathered mastic that no longer stretches
- Failed seals between different materials
In the older streets around Church of St John, old and new materials meet at the roofline and walls, which is where sealant earns its keep.
What to look for in a quote
- What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
- When the joint can take water or movement
- Who turns up on the day
- Whether all the old sealant comes out first
What the job involves on each surface
Brickwork movement joints
Vertical joints in long brick walls let the brickwork expand without cracking. We reseal them with a low-modulus sealant over backing rod.
Render joints
Water behind render can lead to blown patches. A sound joint keeps the render dry behind and helps it last.
What happens if it’s left?
Sealing over the top of old mastic does not hold for long. New sealant does not bond well to old, weathered sealant, so we always take the old sealant out. Where a wall is exposed, as many are in small places like Netherfield, wind-driven rain gets into any failed joint, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
A few things move the cost up or down: the old material and how easily it comes out, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. Your quote takes all of that into account.
