External mastic for Hoo homes and businesses

When to call us in Hoo

Some movement joints have been pointed up with mortar by mistake. With the joint locked solid, the movement turns into cracks elsewhere in the wall.

If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:

  • Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
  • Leaking joints around cladding and façade panels
  • Old sealant gone brittle and cracked
  • Joints pointed up with cement by mistake

If you let a flat or house near Minster station, split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside.

What your quote should include

  • The length of the guarantee
  • Whether they’re fully insured
  • How the joint is cleaned and prepared
  • What the cure time is

Choosing a sealant specialist

How we handle external mastic in Hoo

A movement joint is a deliberate break that lets a wall expand and contract. The sealant in it has to stretch and squeeze for years, and when it fails, the wall takes the strain and water finds a way in. We work on render & cladding joints, joints between brick and frames and façade panels, and common reasons people get in touch are rigid filler in a joint that should flex and moss and dirt in joints with no sealant left.

Somewhere as small as Hoo, homes and farm buildings often face open ground, where walls and rooflines take the weather head on. Gutter joints and wall joints there need a sealant that can flex and stay put.

Big or small, you get the same one-year guarantee.

Honest limits

We’d rather tell you now than do work that won’t last, so these are the limits:

  • Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
  • Failed render or damaged cladding panels
  • Adding movement joints to masonry that has none

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you honestly.

Surfaces we seal

  • Render & cladding joints
  • Copings & trims
  • Joints between brick and frames
  • Façade panels
  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Concrete & block

What happens on the day

When we arrive, we start by going over the job with you, so there are no surprises. We protect the surfaces around the joints before we start. The work generally takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access. For a village or hamlet like Hoo, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. We bring what the job needs, so it can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. We inspect the joints and agree which need resealing and how they’ll be reached.
  2. The old mastic and anything lodged in the joint is removed.
  3. The joint faces are cleaned and primed where the sealant needs it.
  4. Backing rod goes in next, setting the depth and keeping the sealant off the back of the joint.
  5. The new sealant, chosen to suit the brick or render, is applied and tooled to a neat finish.

Before we arrive

  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Let us know about stairs, lifts or work at height
  • Keep children and pets away from the work area

Advice

Leave it or put it right?

A properly done movement joint is an even line in a colour that suits the wall. A rushed bead with no backing looks untidy and does not last. Where a wall is exposed, as many are in small places like Hoo, wind-driven rain gets into any failed joint, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

What you pay reflects the work, not a rough estimate. That is why we ask about the job first.

Why choose Mr Mastic in Hoo

  • Arbo and Everbuild products
  • Neat joints and a tidy finish
  • White, clear, grey or another colour, product permitting
  • Anti-fungal silicone where joints get wet

What external mastic looks like in Hoo

Compared with the north and west, the South East gets less rain, though outdoor sealant still has to go onto a dry joint, so the forecast decides the day. Historic houses like Quex Park (about 2.4 miles north-east) are a reminder that the area around Hoo has older buildings as well as new. Where a home is older, older walls and rooflines need a sealant that moves with them and suits the material.

If you live in an older home near Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, old and new materials meet at the roofline and walls, which is where sealant earns its keep. If you look after a building such as Monkton Church of England Primary School, movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s.

Looking after it afterwards

How long the joints last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Keep water from gutters off the wall
  • Clear growth from the base of walls and joints
  • Walk round the building once a year and look at the joints
  • Show decorators and builders where the movement joints are

Avoid pressure-washing straight into the joints. High-pressure water can lift the edges.

A joint that has stopped moving pushes the movement elsewhere, often as cracks near the joint. Catch it early and you reduce the risk.

Your questions about external mastic in Hoo

Do you cover Hoo for external mastic?

Yes. We work across London and the South East, and Hoo is part of that. You can call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and let us know what needs doing, and we’ll send you a clear quote.

Can you help a landlord with a rental near Minster station?

Yes. We work for letting agents and landlords as well as homeowners, and several properties can be quoted together. Just call 0345 464 0079 or email us with the address and what needs doing, and we will send you a clear quote.

Is it OK to fill a movement joint with cement?

No. Rigid materials can’t move with the wall, so the joint stops doing its job. If it has already been filled, we can generally cut it out and reseal it.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No. The old sealant always comes out first, so the new joint bonds to clean surfaces.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We’re fully insured for every job we do.

How long does external mastic last?

It depends on the exposure, the movement and the product. Treat it as a maintenance item and look at it yearly and reseal when it splits.

Can you quote for more than one area?

Of course. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. We are approved under the ARBOMaster scheme.

Landlord and commercial work in Hoo

In hotels, rooms out of use cost money, so the work can be planned room by room. Hotel work is part of what we do, alongside homes and businesses.

Water getting past a failed joint can damage the building, which matters even more when someone else lives there. Keeping joints in good order is simple maintenance.

Different surfaces, different methods

Joints between dissimilar materials

Brick against render, concrete against metal, stone against timber: every change of material is a joint. We seal the joint with a flexible exterior sealant so the movement is taken up.

Cladding and façade panels

If the façade has a specified sealant, that’s what we use, or one the system allows. Tell us what the building has when you get in touch.
