Common questions in Hemsted

Is Hemsted within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. Our work covers London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Can you help a landlord with a rental near Westenhanger station?

Yes, rental work is part of what we do. You can ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email with the address and a few details, and we’ll give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We are fully insured, and we’ve been doing sealant work for more than 20 years.

Is it worth trying it myself?

Some simple jobs can be done by a careful DIYer. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.

Do the sealants smell?

That depends on the sealant. Some products have a noticeable smell, others very little, and any smell fades as they cure.

What should I tell you?

Just the basics: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. Then call 0345 464 0079 or email us.

Where are you based?

Our base is in Crawley, and we cover South East England, London and all of Scotland.

Do you seal joints where cladding meets other materials?

Yes. Materials like render, brick, metal and uPVC all move differently, so a flexible sealant is needed where they meet. We choose one that suits both surfaces.

External mastic for homes and businesses in Hemsted

Short cuts in external joints show up within a season or two. Overfilled joints, missing backing rod and sealant laid over old sealant all tend to fail early. We strip the joint back and start again. We are often asked to deal with joints pointed up with cement by mistake and leaking joints around cladding and façade panels, on concrete & block, brickwork movement joints and façade panels.

Somewhere as small as Hemsted, homes and farm buildings often face open ground, where walls and rooflines take the weather head on. Joints on those walls need a sealant that moves with the building and stays in place.

Whatever the size of the job, it’s backed by our 12-month guarantee in Hemsted and across Kent.

DIY versus a professional finish

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that is fine. We cut it out and start again, so just mention it when you contact us.

Surface by surface

Copings and trims

Coping and trim joints face rain and sun head on. Each is resealed with a weatherproof, flexible sealant.

Brickwork movement joints

People sometimes point up a brick movement joint by mistake. Where one has been mortared, we cut it out and reseal it with sealant.

Hemsted buildings and the weather

With historic houses such as Westenhanger Castle (about 3.1 miles south) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Hemsted as well as newer homes. Where a home is older, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth. London and the South East are among the drier parts of the UK, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind.

Schools such as Stowting Church of England Primary School are buildings too, and movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s. If you let a flat or house near Westenhanger station, split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside.

Hemsted is about 5 miles north of Hythe, in Kent. Hemsted gets the same service as everywhere we cover: the old material taken out, joints prepared properly and a 12-month guarantee. Our area takes in 922 places across Kent, from the larger towns to small villages. There’s also a page for Chelmsford, about 48 miles away.

Postcode districts we cover here for external mastic: CT18. We also cover Woodland (1 mile south-east), Skeete (1 mile south), Stowting (1 mile west), Rhodes Minnis (1 mile north-east) and Stowting Common (1 mile north-west). Further out, we also cover Ashford (8 miles west), Canterbury (10 miles north), Dover (11 miles east), Folkestone (6 miles south-east), Whitstable (15 miles north) and Faversham (14 miles north-west).

What happens if it’s left?

Resealing a run of joints in one go is usually better than patching one at a time. Joints of the same age tend to fail together, and access only has to be arranged once. Where a wall is exposed, as many are in small places like Hemsted, wind-driven rain gets into any failed joint, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, because water and mould keep working on it. If you’re unsure, ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will give you an honest view and a quote.

When to call us in Hemsted

UV, rain and frost all age exterior sealant. Over the years it hardens, cracks on the surface and loses its give, so the next time the wall moves, it splits or pulls away.

Common reasons people contact us are:

  • Moss and dirt in joints with no sealant left
  • Water getting into walls through failed joints
  • Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
  • Failed seals between different materials

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Mary, older walls, gutters and the joints where extensions meet them need a flexible sealant.

10 questions to ask before you book

How the visit works

We work through the job in order: protect, prepare, seal, tidy. Typically it takes a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation and we leave things clean and tidy. For a village or hamlet like Hemsted, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. We bring what the job needs, so it can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. First we look over the joints with you, agree which to renew and talk through access.
  2. Old sealant and any debris are cut and raked out.
  3. The joint faces are cleaned and primed where the sealant needs it.
  4. Closed-cell backing rod is fitted to set the depth and stop three-sided bonding.
  5. We gun in a flexible exterior sealant in a colour that suits the wall and tool it neatly.

Getting ready for the visit

  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on

Quotes start with a quick conversation. Tell us what’s wrong, where it is and how much there is, and we’ll explain how we’d tackle it. Whenever you are ready, phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email.

Keeping the joints in good condition

Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. Our advice:

  • Never let anyone fill a movement joint with mortar
  • Look over the joints every year, ideally after winter
  • Check the sealant is paintable before painting near it
  • Do not let climbing plants root in the sealant

Do not paint over the new sealant unless we’ve said the product is paintable. Paint can crack on a flexible joint.

Act while the splits are small. Then it’s a straightforward cut-out and reseal with no damage behind it to deal with.

When something else is needed

To be straight with you, there are a few things sealant won’t fix:

  • Damp from another source, such as a leaking gutter or a bridged damp-proof course
  • Loose or hollow render, which needs re-rendering
  • Cracking across the wall rather than at a joint

If in doubt, phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we will say what we think.
