How we handle external mastic in Hedgerley

Failed sealant is cut out, the depth set with closed-cell backing rod, and the joint resealed with a low-modulus sealant made for outside. The colour is chosen to suit the brick or render so the line blends in. We work on render & cladding joints, joints between brick and frames and brickwork movement joints, and the jobs we see most are old sealant gone brittle and cracked and water getting into walls through failed joints.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Hedgerley is booked around the forecast. Let us know about access to every wall, plus any garages or outbuildings.

You’re covered for a year from the day we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We remove it and do the joint properly, so just mention it when you contact us.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

Looking after it afterwards

How long the joints last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Ask before painting over external sealant
  • Have failed joints looked at early
  • Don’t let climbing plants root in the sealant
  • Wash walls gently around the sealant

Follow the cure time we give you before the joint is knocked or disturbed. The surface skins over quickly, but full cure takes longer.

Leave a failed movement joint and water keeps getting into the wall. That can lead to damp patches, staining and frost damage which cost more to put right than the joint.

FAQs for Hedgerley

Can you do external mastic in Hedgerley?

Yes, Hedgerley is within the area we cover. We work across London and the South East. Just ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email with a few details of the job.

Can you help a landlord with a rental near Gerrards Cross station?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for, and several properties can go on one quote. Just call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email with the address and what needs doing, and we’ll send you a clear quote.

What’s an expansion joint in brickwork?

Walls move with heat, cold and moisture, so long walls have planned gaps to take that movement. The gap is sealed with a flexible sealant over backing rod.

Is it OK to fill a movement joint with cement?

No. Cement or mortar cannot stretch, so the joint stops doing its job. Where a joint has been mortared, it can often be raked out and sealed properly.

Can you match the colour of my brickwork?

There’s a good range of exterior colours, including greys, browns, whites and stone tones. We pick the one that suits your wall best so it doesn’t stand out.

Where do you work from?

We are a Crawley-based firm. We work across South East England, London and Scotland.

When is the sealant fully cured?

It depends on the product and the temperature. We tell you how long to leave it before we go.

Can you work on commercial sites?

Yes. We can plan bigger jobs in stages.

When to call us in Hedgerley

Poor preparation causes many early failures: dusty or wet faces, no primer where one was needed, or old sealant left in. The new sealant then lets go long before it should.

Look out for any of the following:

  • Hard, crazed mastic that has stopped moving
  • Panel joints letting water in
  • Sealant pulling away from one side of the joint
  • Gaps where render, brick and frames meet

Letting a property close to Gerrards Cross station? Then split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside.

What your quote should include

  • How much experience the applicator has
  • Are they insured?
  • Whether all the old sealant comes out first
  • Which colour the sealant will be

Choosing a sealant specialist

What sealant work cannot fix

Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:

  • Movement that’s more than a sealant joint can take
  • Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
  • Cutting new joints into brickwork, which is building work rather than sealant work

If in doubt, phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think.

Why it’s worth doing now in Hedgerley

It often makes sense to reseal all the failing joints on an elevation together. Joints of the same age tend to fail together. Older cottages and farmhouses around Hedgerley can have timber floors and frames, where water from a failed joint can cause rot if it’s left.

Rather than a set price list, we look at what your job involves: the amount of work, the old material and the access. The price is agreed before we begin.

Why us?

  • We agree the colour with you first
  • Sanitary silicone with an anti-fungal additive in wet areas
  • More than 20 years in sealant work
  • Old sealant always removed completely

Work for landlords, hotels and businesses

Businesses can book us for washrooms, kitchens, offices and more. For commercial premises, we can talk through working times when we quote.

Whether it’s one flat or a portfolio, you get the same standard of work: old sealant fully removed, joints prepared properly and a one-year guarantee.

How the visit works

On the day, we look over the joints with you first, so you know exactly what we are doing. We protect the surfaces around the joints before we start. Most jobs take a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation. For a village or hamlet like Hedgerley, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. Everything for the job comes with us, so a second trip is avoided where possible.

  1. First we look over the joints with you, agree which to renew and talk through access.
  2. The old mastic and anything lodged in the joint is removed.
  3. The joint faces are cleaned and primed where the sealant needs it.
  4. Backing rod goes in next, setting the depth and keeping the sealant off the back of the joint.
  5. The new sealant, chosen to suit the brick or render, is applied and tooled to a neat finish.

How to prepare

  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on
  • Mention any tricky access
  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive

Walls and rooflines in Hedgerley

The South East is one of the drier parts of the UK, but outside sealant still needs a dry, clean surface, so outdoor work is planned around the forecast. With historic houses such as Cliveden (about 3.8 miles west) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Hedgerley as well as newer homes. In older buildings, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth.

For an older house near a landmark such as Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain. Managing a site like Farnham Common Junior School? Then its movement joints, gutters and trims need looking after like any other building’s.
