External mastic near Gateside

Gateside questions

Do you cover Gateside for external mastic?

Yes, Gateside is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we will give you a clear quote.

Is external mastic in Gateside guaranteed?

All our work, in Gateside and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Always. Sealing over old sealant is the main reason resealing fails early, and it’s something we never do.

Is it OK to fill a movement joint with cement?

No, not if it’s a movement joint. Pointing it stops it working and can lead to cracking. We will reseal it with a flexible sealant.

Can landlords and businesses book you?

Yes. We work for householders, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels across Fife.

Where are you based?

Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. We cover Gateside and the rest of Fife.

How long does external mastic last?

That depends on the wall, the weather and the movement. Look for splits, hardening or edges coming away.

What’s an expansion joint in brickwork?

Walls move with heat, cold and moisture, and planned joints take up that movement. The gap is sealed with a flexible sealant over backing rod.

About our external mastic in Gateside

Joints in render and cladding are easy to overlook until a damp patch appears. We look over the joints, agree the ones to renew and reseal with a flexible, weatherproof product in a matching colour. If you have weeds or debris growing in open joints and movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant, we can help.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Gateside depends on the weather. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.

Big or small, you get the same 12-month guarantee.

How the job changes by surface

Brickwork movement joints

Brick walls have vertical movement joints to absorb expansion. We reseal them with a low-modulus sealant over backing rod.

Copings and trims

Coping and trim joints face rain and sun head on. Each is resealed with a weatherproof, flexible sealant.

Looking after it afterwards

After the cure time, these simple habits help:

  • Clear growth from the base of walls and joints
  • Point out the joints to other trades
  • Fix overflowing gutters above sealed joints
  • Never let anyone fill a movement joint with mortar

Give the sealant the cure time we tell you before anything rubs against it. The surface skins over quickly, but full cure takes longer.

Once a joint can’t move, the wall finds another way, usually as cracking in the brickwork or render nearby. Catch it early and you reduce the risk.

Work for landlords, hotels and businesses

A neglected joint can let water reach the structure, which matters even more when someone else lives there. Resealing at the right time is simple maintenance.

Failed sealant is one of the commonest items on a check-out report. We can quote for more than one property at once.

Quotes for external mastic in Gateside

There’s no set price list, because jobs vary so much. What we look at:

  • How easy the joints are to reach
  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • Any mould that needs treating
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved

Rather than a set price list, we price the job in front of us: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. The price is agreed before we begin.

What to tell us for a quote

Before you ask for a quote, have a think about:

  • The type of property
  • The rough size of the job
  • How we’d reach the joints
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work

For a quick quote, get us on the phone, or email us if that’s easier. Describe what needs sealing and we’ll talk you through the work and give you a clear quote.

What external mastic looks like in Gateside

Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that. Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface.

In the older streets around Edenshead Church, older walls, gutters and the joints where extensions meet them need a flexible sealant. Around Gateside, as everywhere, external mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Can I do it myself?

If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, then guaranteed for a year.

Honest limits

In fairness, there are a few things sealant won’t fix:

  • Cracked brickwork or render that needs a builder or plasterer
  • Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
  • Adding movement joints to masonry that has none

If you are not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Surfaces we seal

  • Concrete & block
  • Render & cladding joints
  • Joints between brick and frames
  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Copings & trims
  • Façade panels

The process

On the day, there’s very little for you to do. Point us to the joints and we will get on with it. The job generally takes a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation. In smaller Scottish places, parking is usually less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. We start by walking round the building and agreeing the joints and the access.
  2. Every bit of old sealant and any mortar or debris is cut out.
  3. The faces are brushed clean and primed where the product requires it.
  4. We fit closed-cell backing rod to control the depth.
  5. We apply the sealant, tool it and check the whole run.

Preparing for the visit

  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Let us know about stairs, lifts or work at height
  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on
