External mastic for homes and businesses in Chalk
Where two different materials meet, such as brick and render or blockwork and metal, they move at different rates. A flexible sealant bridges the two where a rigid filler would soon crack. Typical jobs include brick movement joints where the sealant has split and failed seals between different materials, across render & cladding joints, concrete & block and brickwork movement joints.
Somewhere as small as Chalk, homes and farm buildings often face open ground, where walls and rooflines take the weather head on. Gutter joints and wall joints there need a sealant that can flex and stay put.
A 12-month guarantee comes with the work, just as it does everywhere we cover.

How we quote for external mastic
Your quote is based on your job. We look at:
- Mould in or behind the old joints
- The number and length of the joints
- Whether the work is at height
- How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
No two jobs are quite the same, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all play a part.
What to tell us for a quote
What to tell us when you ask for a quote:
- What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
- The address or postcode of the job
- Photos by email, if that’s easy
- Roughly how big the job is
Every job is quoted individually, so start by telling us what you need. Simply call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and describe the job, and pictures are welcome.
How the job changes by surface
Copings and trims
Metal and stone copings both move with temperature, so a flexible sealant suits them best year round.
Brickwork movement joints
Clay brickwork grows slightly over its life and moves with the weather. That movement goes into the joint, so the sealant in it must stay soft and stretchy.
What happens on the day
We keep the work tidy and contained to the area we’re working on. The job usually takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building, and we explain the cure time before we leave. Somewhere like Chalk needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. We bring what the job needs, so it can be finished in one trip where possible.
- First we look over the joints with you, agree which to renew and talk through access.
- Old sealant and any debris are cut and raked out.
- We clean both faces of the joint and prime them where the product calls for it.
- We push in closed-cell backing rod so the sealant is the right depth and bonds to the sides only.
- The new sealant, chosen to suit the brick or render, is applied and tooled to a neat finish.
Getting ready for the visit
- Mention any tricky access
- For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
- Clear the area around the work

Looking after it afterwards
Looking after new joints is easy, and it makes a real difference:
- Keep movement joints as flexible joints, not mortar
- Tell anyone working on the walls about the movement joints
- Check the sealant is paintable before painting near it
- Fix overflowing gutters above sealed joints
Look over the joints once a year, ideally after winter. Watch for splits, edges coming away or growth in the joint.
Once a joint can’t move, the wall finds another way, often as cracks near the joint. Catch it early and you reduce the risk.
When to call us in Chalk
Sunlight, wet weather and frost wear exterior sealant down. Over the years it hardens, cracks on the surface and loses its give, so the joint eventually tears or comes away from one side.
Any of these means the joints need attention:
- Damp patches traced to an open external joint
- Rigid filler in a joint that should flex
- Gaps where render, brick and frames meet
- Weathered mastic that no longer stretches
Rented homes near Gravesend station change hands often, and outside joints that have cracked can let damp into a rental, so check them between lets.
What your quote should include
- Which sealant they’ll use, and why
- Whether they’re fully insured
- Who does the work, and how experienced they are
- What the quote includes, VAT included or not

Why deal with it now?
Resealing a run of joints in one go is generally better than patching one at a time. Joints of the same age tend to fail together, and access only has to be arranged once. In a small place like Chalk, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
Doing several joints on one visit is generally more efficient than separate visits, so it’s worth mentioning everything you’d like done. We will give you a clear quote for the lot.

Your questions about external mastic in Chalk
Will you come out to Chalk?
Yes. Chalk is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Do you work for landlords with property near Gravesend station?
Yes. We work for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners. You can ring 0345 464 0079 or email us with the details for a clear quote.
What should I tell you?
Only a few details: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. After that, simply call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email.
Are you an approved applicator?
Yes. We’re an ARBOMaster approved applicator, which is run for the Arbo sealant brand.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes: twelve months. If there’s a problem with our work in that time, tell us and we’ll put it right.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. Full insurance covers our work, and we can confirm the details when we quote.
Can you match the colour of my brickwork?
We aim for a joint that suits the wall rather than one that jumps out. Colour is agreed with you before we begin, matched as closely as the range allows.
Can a movement joint be filled with mortar?
No. A mortar-filled joint cannot move, so the movement cracks the wall elsewhere. Use a flexible sealant with backing rod.
Outside joints around Chalk
Chalk is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That’s hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, especially on the side facing the sea. London and the South East are among the drier parts of the UK, but outside sealant still needs a dry, clean surface, so outdoor work is planned around the forecast.
Homes close to Church of St Mary include some older properties, and old and new materials meet at the roofline and walls, which is where sealant earns its keep. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Thamesview School, its movement joints, gutters and trims need looking after like any other building’s.

A neglected joint can let water reach the structure, which matters even more when someone else lives there. Resealing at the right time is simple maintenance.
