Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what sealant cannot fix:
- Soft or decayed wood in the frame
- Draughts through the window seals rather than the frame
- A failed sealed unit that has misted up

About our window mastic in Shiel Bridge
Most frames have an outside joint and an inside one. Outside, the mastic keeps rain out; the internal joint closes the gap to the plaster and stops draughts. We seal one or both, depending on what’s needed. We are often asked to deal with black, perished sealant on frames and leaking joints at the ends of sills, across uPVC windows, composite doors and aluminium frames.
Many older Scottish homes still have timber windows set into stone walls. Those suit a traditional sand mastic or a neutral-cure sealant, not an acetoxy silicone that can attack some stone.

What happens if it’s left?
Running fresh sealant over the old joint is tempting, but it will not grip old, dirty sealant. It peels before long, and water still gets in behind. Proper resealing starts with removing the old joint. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

Common problems we fix in Shiel Bridge
Joint shape matters as much as the product. A skim of sealant over a wide gap soon tears, while a joint packed solid cannot stretch. Backing rod sets the right depth.
Most people get in touch after spotting one of these:
- Mastic that has split away from the wall
- Draughty joints inside around the window
- Gaps left after new windows were fitted
- Mastic that is falling out in pieces
Whether the job is in Shiel Bridge itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.
What to look for in a quote
- When the joint can take water or movement
- What the quote includes, VAT included or not
- Whether they seal over old material or remove it
- How much experience the applicator has
What the job involves on each surface
Window sills
Sills catch the water running down the glass, so the sill ends and the joint under the frame are vital. They’re cut out and resealed with exterior sealant.
Composite doors
Front doors take the weather head on. We pay most attention there.

How it works
Once we are on site, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. After that, the work takes a few hours for a few frames, or a day or more for a whole house. Outdoor work around Shiel Bridge depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.
- Each frame is looked over and we agree which ones need resealing.
- The old mastic is cut out and scraped back to clean surfaces.
- Where the gap is deep, backing rod goes in first.
- A flexible exterior sealant is applied in a colour to suit the frame.
- Every joint is tooled smooth and checked before we leave.
Getting ready for the visit
- Clear the area around the work
- Mention if the joints have been sealed before
- Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work

FAQs for Shiel Bridge
Is Shiel Bridge within the area you cover?
Yes, Shiel Bridge is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
Does living near the coast affect window mastic in Shiel Bridge?
Coastal weather is harder on outside sealant: there’s more wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt in the air. The right product, a clean joint and the right depth all help it cope.
Do you work for hotels and businesses?
Yes. Commercial and hotel work is a large part of what we do, as well as homes. We can talk about working times when we quote.
When is the sealant fully cured?
Cure times vary by product. Before we leave, we’ll tell you the cure time.
What do you put in the joint?
The product depends on the job: anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas, and other sealants where joints move or face the weather. Brands we use include Arbo and Everbuild.
How much does window mastic cost in Shiel Bridge?
Every job is different, so each one gets its own quote. To get one, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a short description of the job.
How many windows can you do in a day?
The work takes a few hours for a few frames, or a day or more for a whole house. Access and how stubborn the old mastic is affect the time most.
What should I tell you?
The location, the problem and the rough size of the job. Photos by email help too.
How to look after the new joints
No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:
- Keep jet washers away from the mastic
- Avoid harsh chemicals near the mastic
- Keep timber frames painted
- Keep paint off silicone joints
Silicone can’t usually be painted, so if you’re planning to paint the frames or walls, tell us beforehand. We can use a paintable sealant where that matters.
On timber windows, water behind the joint can lead to rot. Rotten timber needs a joiner, not a sealant, so early resealing is worth it.
Should I try it myself first?
Not every job suits DIY: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas need the right product, the right access and the right method.
Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.
Frames and glazing around Shiel Bridge
Shiel Bridge is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on the mastic around window and door frames, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Shiel Bridge is in the west of Scotland, which is wetter than the east, so there’s plenty of rain for the mastic around window and door frames to keep out.
In and around Shiel Bridge, as anywhere, good window mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.
