Window mastic near Hungerford

How we handle window mastic in Hungerford

Some gaps around frames are far deeper than they look. Packing it solid with sealant gives a joint that can’t flex, so we fit backing rod to set the right depth. That way the new bead bonds to the frame and the wall only. If you have black, perished sealant on frames and gaps between the frame and the inside reveal, we can put it right, on window sills, aluminium frames and composite doors alike.

Homes in small places like Hungerford often stand in the open, with little to shelter their windows from wind and rain. That exposure dries out and cracks the mastic around frames and sills faster.

Whatever the size of the job, it’s backed by our one-year guarantee.

How the visit works

At the end, we look at the finished work together and explain the cure time. The work normally takes a morning for a couple of windows and a door, depending on how much there is to do. For a village or hamlet like Hungerford, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. We bring what the job needs, so it can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. Each frame is looked over and we agree which ones need resealing.
  2. The old mastic is cut out and scraped back to clean surfaces.
  3. Where the gap is deep, backing rod goes in first.
  4. The new sealant goes on in white, brown, anthracite grey, black or clear to suit.
  5. Every joint is tooled smooth and checked before we leave.

Preparing for the visit

  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
  • Let us know about parking restrictions

Advice

Hungerford homes and the weather

Compared with the north and west, the South East gets less rain, though outdoor sealant still has to go onto a dry joint, so the forecast decides the day. Historic houses like Breamore House (about 4.3 miles north) are a reminder that the area around Hungerford has older buildings as well as new. In older buildings, older frames set in brick or stone need a sealant that suits them, and sometimes that’s traditional sand mastic.

If you live in an older home near Church of the Holy Ascension, frames set in older brick or stone need a sealant that suits the wall as well as the frame.

How the job changes by surface

Timber windows & doors

On period timber windows, traditional sand mastic is sometimes the better choice. We will tell you which suits your home.

Window sills

Every drop off the glass ends up on the sill, so the joints at each end and underneath matter. Each is cleaned out and resealed.

Leave it or put it right?

Redecorating is a good moment to renew the mastic. A clean new bead makes new paint or render look finished, and it’s easier while the walls are being worked on anyway. Where a wall is exposed, as many are in small places like Hungerford, wind-driven rain gets into any failed joint, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

There are no prices on our website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. Call for a quick quote.

Hungerford: your questions answered

Will you come out to Hungerford?

Yes, Hungerford is covered. We work across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Is there a guarantee on window mastic in Hungerford?

All our work, in Hungerford and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Can you seal the gap between the frame and the plaster indoors?

Yes. Draughts often come through the inside gap too, so it can be worth sealing both.

Will new mastic stop draughts?

Often, yes. The gap between frame and wall is a common source of draughts, and resealing inside and out closes it.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No, it won’t last. It may look fine at first, but the new layer lifts away from the old one. Removing the old sealant completely is the only lasting way.

What sealant do you use?

Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, picked for each joint. We explain the product when we quote.

Can I do it myself?

You can, for simple jobs. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.

How long will my window job take?

That depends on the number of frames, how they’re reached and the state of the old mastic. You’ll know the timing when we quote.

What sealant work cannot fix

Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:

  • A sash or casement that will not close properly
  • A door that needs adjusting, rehanging or new seals
  • Damp coming through the wall itself rather than the frame joint

If in doubt, phone 0345 464 0079 or email us and we’ll say what we think.

Can I do it myself?

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

Do you need window mastic in Hungerford?

A lot of older mastic was never designed to stay flexible. Once it’s rigid, every bit of frame movement pulls at it, and a gap opens along one edge.

If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:

  • Gaps where the sill meets the wall
  • A bead that does not match the frame
  • Black, perished sealant on frames
  • Hard, cracked sealant around windows

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Hyde Church of England Primary School, the mastic around its windows and doors needs looking after like any other building’s.
