DIY sealant or a professional job?
The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, then guaranteed for a year.
Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.
Why act early in Cousley Wood
Choosing the product is half the job. Interior caulk and bathroom silicone aren’t made for exterior frame joints. A low-modulus exterior sealant keeps its stretch through hot and cold weather. Older cottages and farmhouses around Cousley Wood can have timber floors and frames, and water through a failed joint can rot timber if it’s left.
Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. Size, access and the product the joint needs all play a part.

How we quote for window mastic
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:
- Mould in or behind the old joints
- How many areas need sealing
- Which sealant suits the joint
- Any working-time requirements on site
Instead of a standard rate, we look at what your job involves: the amount of work, the old material and the access. You will know the price before we begin.
What to tell us for a quote
Photos by email are helpful but not essential. Try to tell us:
- Roughly how big the job is
- Any previous sealing or DIY work
- The address or postcode of the job
- Pictures of the joints, sent by email
It all starts with a short chat. Describe the problem, the location and the size of the job, and we will talk you through what we’d do. Whenever you are ready, ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email.

Heavy door frames can move more than windows. The sealant must cope with it without cracking.

An exposed front door gets wind-driven rain. We pay most attention there.
Windows and doors in Cousley Wood
With historic houses such as Wadhurst Castle (about 1.6 miles south-west) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Cousley Wood as well as newer homes. In older buildings, older timber frames in brick or stone need a different approach from a modern uPVC window. Rainfall in the South East is lower than in much of the UK, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind.
If you let a flat or house near Wadhurst station, cracked frame mastic tends to show up as a draught or damp complaint, so it’s worth checking between lets. In the older streets around Rehoboth Chapel, the joint between an old wall and a newer frame is normally the first place rain gets in. If you look after a building such as Uplands Community College, the mastic around its windows and doors needs looking after like any other building’s.

The process
Good joint work is mostly preparation, and we do not rush it. Every joint is cleaned and dried before new material goes in. In total, it usually takes anything from an hour or two to a full day, depending on how many frames there are. Somewhere as small as Cousley Wood, access is often the only tricky part. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.
- First, we go round the frames with you and agree the list.
- We remove the old mastic and clean the frame edge and wall.
- Where the gap is deep, backing rod goes in first.
- A flexible exterior sealant is applied in a colour to suit the frame.
- Every joint is tooled smooth and checked before we leave.
Preparing for the visit

How to look after the new joints
Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:
- Clear any debris from frame drain holes
- Repaint timber before it’s bare
- Do not aim a pressure washer at the joints
- Avoid harsh chemicals near the mastic
Timber frames need their paint kept up, since wood that gets wet swells and shrinks more. Paint up to the joint, not over the silicone.
Water gets in quietly when mastic fails. You might not see it until plaster blows or a damp patch appears inside. Early resealing stops it reaching that point.
