Questions from Peterhead

Is sand mastic in a coastal place like Peterhead any different?

Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.

Do you cover Peterhead for sand mastic?

Yes, Peterhead is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we will give you a clear price.

Can sand mastic be painted?

It’s traditionally left unpainted, as guidance on traditional windows advises. Talk to us before any painting near it.

Is it possible to take out silicone and use sand mastic instead?

Yes. We remove the silicone and clean the joint, then point it with sand mastic.

Where are you based?

We work from Crawley. We cover Peterhead and the rest of Aberdeenshire.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Tell us what needs doing and where, with photos by email if possible. We’ll ask anything else we need to know.

How long does sand mastic take?

That depends on the amount of work, but most jobs take a few hours per window, depending on the condition of the joints. We’ll give you a better idea when we quote.

Do I need to be at home?

That depends on where the joints are. For work indoors, someone needs to let us in, while outside work can sometimes be arranged differently.

Sand mastic in Peterhead

Fresh sand mastic forms a skin quite soon but full hardening takes longer. Traditional guidance is not to paint over it, so ask us before you decorate. If you have mastic worn away on windows facing the weather and mastic round period door frames that has failed, we can help, on tenement windows, sash and case windows and timber door frames alike.

Scottish towns like Peterhead tend to mix older stone-built streets, harled houses and newer estates, and windows range from older sash and case to modern uPVC. The sealant has to suit both the frame and the wall it sits in.

Big or small, you get the same one-year guarantee.

Should I try it myself first?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

Different surfaces, different methods

Timber door frames

Round a period front door, sand mastic gives the right look.

Stone surrounds

Stone openings are rarely perfectly straight, so the gap isn’t the same all the way round. We shape it by hand to follow the stone.

Work for landlords, hotels and businesses

In hotels, rooms out of use cost money, so the work can be planned room by room around your bookings where we can. We have worked in hotels as well as homes and businesses.

We work for letting agents and landlords as well as homeowners. Resealing between tenancies keeps a property looking cared for before the next move-in.

Keeping the joints in good condition

Good habits help new joints last longer. Our tips:

  • Avoid heavy scraping on the mastic joint
  • Keep modern sealant off the mastic
  • Keep sills and gutters clear so water drains away
  • Sort the mastic before the decorators arrive

Do not run silicone over the new mastic. If anything cracks, get it looked at before trying a quick fix.

Fine cracks show the mastic is starting to fail. Renewing it then is simpler than waiting until it falls out.

Why act early in Peterhead

Not every draught comes from the sashes themselves. Gaps between the frame and the wall can be just as bad and new mastic seals them. In Peterhead, wind and rain soon get through failed outside joints. Inside, a failed seal around a bath or shower lets water into floors and ceilings.

Instead of a standard rate, we look at what your job involves: the amount of work, the old material and the access. You will know the price before we begin.

What happens on the day

Most of a good job is in the preparation, and we don’t rush it. Every joint is cleaned and dried before new material goes in. All told, the work takes a few hours per window, depending on the condition of the joints. Parking around Peterhead is rarely difficult, though older streets in the centre can be tight. If you’re in a flat with a shared stair or a door entry system, let us know when you book.

  1. We check each window surround and the condition of the joint.
  2. The joint is raked out and cleaned.
  3. Large voids are packed out.
  4. New sand mastic is applied and shaped by hand.
  5. We finish the mastic to a tidy line.

Frames and glazing around Peterhead

Peterhead is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on the mastic around older windows and doors, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Many older homes in Scotland have sash and case windows, often pointed into the wall with traditional sand mastic.

Whether the job is in Peterhead itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish. In and around Peterhead, as anywhere, good sand mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.
