Need sand mastic in Aird?

Sand mastic for homes and businesses in Aird

Sand mastic skins over fairly quickly but full hardening takes longer. Traditional guidance is not to paint over it and we will advise if you’re redecorating. We work on timber door frames, period & listed homes and stone surrounds, and the jobs we see most are mastic worn away on windows facing the weather and crumbling sand mastic round a window.

Mastic can only go onto a dry joint, so outside work in Aird depends on the weather. Let us know about access to every frame, including any upstairs.

Whatever the size of the job, you get the same 12-month guarantee in Aird and across Na h-Eileanan Siar.

Frames and glazing around Aird

Aird is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on the mastic around older windows and doors, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Sash and case windows are common in older Scottish homes, often pointed into the wall with traditional sand mastic.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Aird Primary School, its window and door frames need their mastic kept sound, just like a home’s. In and around Aird, as anywhere, good sand mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Aird is in Na h-Eileanan Siar. From the centre of Aird to the outskirts, we cover sand mastic for every kind of property. Aird is one of 87 places in Na h-Eileanan Siar where we work for sand mastic.

We work across HS2 for sand mastic. If you need sand mastic at a property on Barraid Mhicsuain and Slighe Mhicsuain or anywhere close by, we can help. If you’re just outside Aird, we cover Portvoller (1 mile north-east), Port Mholair (1 mile north-east), Shulishader (1 mile west), Sulaisiadar (2 miles south-west) and Garrabost (3 miles south-west). Island and remote addresses take a little more planning, so tell us where you are when you ask for a quote.

Can I do it myself?

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

Not every job suits DIY: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs need the right product, the right access and the right method.

What affects the cost of sand mastic

Jobs vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:

  • Whether the work is at height
  • Any mould that needs treating
  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove

Some things make a job bigger or smaller: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, whether mould needs treating, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

Asking for a quote

Photos by email are helpful but not essential. Try to tell us:

  • The address or postcode of the job
  • The type of property
  • The problem you’ve noticed
  • Roughly how big the job is

A good description makes for an accurate quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is.

What happens if it’s left?

Filling over old, loose mastic doesn’t last. Raking out and preparing the joint gives it a sound base so the new mastic stays put. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

Leaving a failed joint usually makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re not sure whether it needs doing, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you an honest view and a quote.

Looking after it afterwards

How long the joints last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Ask us before painting near the mastic
  • Check with your local planning authority if your home is listed
  • Plan mastic work ahead of painting
  • Clear gutters so water doesn’t pour onto the windows

Avoid sealing over the mastic with silicone. If anything cracks, get it looked at rather than patching it.

Good mastic helps keep the frame dry. Failed mastic lets water reach the timber and timber that stays wet can rot.

Aird questions

Will you come out to Aird?

Yes. Aird is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Is sand mastic in a coastal place like Aird any different?

Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. It’s worth checking the walls that face the sea first.

Are you an approved applicator?

Yes. We are an ARBOMaster approved applicator, which is run for the Arbo sealant brand.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes, regularly. We can plan bigger jobs in stages to suit the site.

Does someone need to be in?

We need access to the joints, so we’ll agree that with you when we book. For inside work, that normally means someone being in.

Is it worth trying it myself?

You can, for simple jobs. The key is preparation: remove all the old material and work on a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.

Is consent needed for window work on a listed home?

Your local planning authority is the one to ask. They decide whether consent is needed.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

We work from Crawley. We cover Aird and the rest of Na h-Eileanan Siar, along with the rest of our area.

What we do, step by step

We bring everything the job needs with us, so you do not need to buy or prepare anything. Once we have agreed what’s being done, the area is protected and the work begins. It normally takes a few hours for a single window, longer for several. Somewhere like Aird may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. First, we look at the surrounds with you and agree what needs doing.
  2. Old, loose mastic is raked out and the joint cleaned.
  3. Large voids are packed out first, so the mastic isn’t too thick.
  4. We mix the sand mastic and apply it by hand, shaping it to the joint.
  5. The mastic is finished to sit tidily against the stone or brick.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
  • Tell us if parking is tricky
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in

Landlord and commercial work in Aird

Letting agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the address, the job and how access works and we will quote.

A neglected joint can let water reach the structure, which matters even more when someone else lives there. Resealing at the right time is simple maintenance.
