Regrouting around Letchworth
Letchworth is one of England’s garden cities, planned in the early twentieth century. Homes range from early twentieth-century houses to later estates, so bathrooms and kitchens of every age need their sealant and grout renewing. Most of the South East has hard water, so limescale builds up on sealant, grout and fittings, and it has to be cleaned off before new sealant goes in.
Rented homes near Letchworth Garden City station change hands often, and clean grout and fresh sealant between tenancies make a bathroom look cared for again. Homes close to Church of St Paul include some older properties, and bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.
Letchworth is about 5 miles north of Stevenage, in Hertfordshire. How we handle regrouting in Letchworth
Most regrouting jobs include resealing too. Grout is for the joints between tiles, but internal corners and edges flex, so they’re sealed with silicone rather than grout. Renewing both together means nothing is left half-done. Typical jobs include corners filled with grout instead of silicone and floor grout that won’t come clean, on kitchen splashbacks, shower walls and wet rooms.
Around Letchworth, it’s mostly busy family bathrooms and kitchens, which is hard on sealant and grout. The usual signs are mould in the bead, gaps by the sink and grout that’s cracked or stained.
All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months.

How the visit works
Before we leave, we go over the finished joints with you and tell you how long to leave it. The work normally takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area, depending on the size of the job. A visit in Letchworth needs access to the work and a place to park close by. If the job is outside, mention gates, side access and anything above ground floor.
- We start by checking the tiles for any that are loose or hollow.
- Old grout is raked out to a consistent depth without chipping the tiles.
- The joints are vacuumed and cleaned.
- We fill the joints with new grout, then clean the tiles.
- We reseal the internal corners and edges with silicone.
How to prepare
- For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
- Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed
- On commercial sites, let us know about site rules

Advice
DIY versus a professional finish
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.
Not every job suits DIY: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs call for the right materials, safe access and experience.
What the job involves on each surface
Shower walls
Shower walls get wet every day, so its grout takes the most punishment. It’s often the first place grout washes out.
Corners and edges
Edges are resealed while we’re there, so the whole area is finished together.
Keeping the joints in good condition
How long the joints last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Stick to mild products for cleaning grout
- Keep harsh bleach and acid cleaners off the grout
- Use a soft brush rather than a wire one
- Rinse the tiles after showering
Keep an eye on the silicone in the corners. It’s the part that moves, so the sealant there will need renewing in time, long before the grout does.
Grout that stays dark after cleaning is starting to fail. Regrouting at this stage is straightforward while the tiles are still sound.
Signs you need regrouting in Letchworth
Hard water and soap leave a film on grout that’s hard to shift. In time the grout under it darkens and breaks down, which is when replacing it makes sense.
It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:
- Cracked grout along the bath or tray
- Grout stained black or orange that will not clean
- A grout colour that no longer suits the room
- Good tiles let down by tired grout
Schools such as Hillshott Infant School and Nursery are buildings too, and washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.

Landlords, agents and businesses in Letchworth
Housing providers, facilities teams and property managers book us too in Letchworth and across Hertfordshire. Several sites can be quoted together, and we are fully insured for the work.
We work for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners. Sealant work between tenants keeps a property looking cared for.
When it isn’t the sealant
Sealant isn’t the answer to every problem, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t solve:
- Water coming from plumbing rather than grout
- A structure that flexes behind the tiles
- Waterproofing that has failed below the tiling
If in doubt, phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we will say what we think before booking.
