Regrouting in Cock Street, done properly

Most regrouting jobs include resealing too. Grout is for the joints between tiles, but corners and edges move, so they need flexible silicone instead. Doing both at once leaves the whole area sound. We work on shower walls, wet rooms and bathroom floors, and the jobs we see most are gaps where the shower grout has gone and grout that makes sound tiles look old.

Homes around Cock Street are mostly houses and cottages rather than flats. The work is the same as anywhere: old material cut out, joints cleaned and a fresh finish laid.

Why deal with it now?

If tiles are loose, regrouting alone is not the answer. We’ll tell you before we start, so you can decide what to do. Where the tiles are sound, regrouting is far less disruptive than retiling. Where a wall is exposed, as many are in small places like Cock Street, wind-driven rain gets into any failed joint, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

Some things make a job bigger or smaller: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

Why us?

  • 12-month guarantee on every job

Keeping the joints in good condition

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering
  • Run the extractor fan during and after a shower
  • Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers on grout
  • Use gentle cleaners on grout

Wipe the tiles down after a shower keeps water off the grout. Ventilate the room well so the grout dries between uses.

Stains that will not clean are a sign the grout is breaking down. At this point it’s a simple regrout while the tiles are still sound.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

Signs you need regrouting in Cock Street

Poor ventilation keeps grout damp, giving mould a place to grow. When black spots keep returning, the mould has usually got into the grout.

The most common problems we see are:

  • Grout stained black or orange that will not clean
  • Grout that makes sound tiles look old
  • Cracked grout along the bath or tray
  • Gaps where the shower grout has gone

Rented homes near Bures station change hands often, and a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant.

What to look for in a quote

  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • Which colour the sealant will be
  • When the joint can take water or movement
  • Who turns up on the day

Our hiring checklist

Regrouting around Cock Street

Most of the South East has hard water, so limescale builds up on sealant, grout and fittings, and it has to be cleaned off before new sealant goes in.

In the older streets around St Matthew's Church, timber floors under older bathrooms flex, so joints need a sealant that moves with them.

The process

Our applicators work methodically: protection first, then preparation, sealing and a tidy-up. Typically it takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room, and the area is left clean. Somewhere as small as Cock Street, access is often the only tricky part. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.

  1. First, we check for loose or hollow tiles and point out any we find.
  2. The old grout comes out to a consistent depth, without damaging the tiles.
  3. We vacuum the joints and clean out the dust.
  4. Fresh grout goes into the joints and the tile faces are wiped clean.
  5. The corners and edges get new silicone, because grout there would crack.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
  • Mention any parking rules near the property
