How we handle regrouting in Alresford

Grout is the filler between your tiles, while sealant goes where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop. When grout cracks or washes out, water has a way in behind the tiling. We rake it out and replace it, then reseal the corners and edges. If you have cracked grout along the bath or tray and grout that’s cracking and breaking up, we can help, whatever the surface.

Smaller places like Alresford still have plenty of bathrooms that work hard every day. Whether it’s a cottage bathroom or a newer en suite, the approach is the same: all the old material out, the joint cleaned and dried, then new sealant or grout.

Every job is covered by our one-year guarantee, wherever you are in Essex.

Why deal with it now?

Colouring the surface of old grout is a quick cosmetic fix. They won’t fill gaps or keep water out, and stains can show through again. A proper regrout puts new grout in the joint. Homes in smaller places like Alresford can face more weather, and failed outside joints let damp into walls. Indoors, a failed seal lets water into floors and panels as it would anywhere.

There are no prices on our website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. For a quick quote, please call 0345 464 0079 or email us and we will talk you through it.

Surface by surface

Bathroom wall tiles

We can regroute all the walls in a bathroom, depending on the area. You can change the colour at the same time.

Kitchen splashbacks

A splashback can be regrouted without touching the worktop. The joint along the worktop is resealed with silicone.

What sealant work can’t fix

We will always be straight with you, so here’s what sealant cannot fix:

  • Failed tanking or waterproofing under the tiles
  • A floor or wall that keeps moving
  • A leaking shower valve or waste

If you’re not sure, just phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer.

Regrouting in Alresford: local notes

Alresford is within about 2 miles of the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Hard water is the norm across most of the South East, so limescale builds up on sealant, grout and fittings.

If you look after a building such as Alresford Primary School, washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes. If you live in an older home near Saint Andrew's Church, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.

Alresford is about 5 miles south-east of Colchester, in Essex. Alresford gets the same service as everywhere we cover: the old material taken out, joints prepared properly and a 12-month guarantee. Alresford is one of 644 towns and villages in Essex where we work for regrouting. You can also see our page for Chelmsford, about 23 miles away.

We work across CO7 for regrouting and the streets around it. We cover properties on Station Road, Church Road and Cox Road. Alresford: your questions answered

I let a flat near Alresford station. Can you help?

Yes, we work for landlords and letting agents. You can phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email with the address and a few details, and we will give you a fixed price before work begins.

Do you cover Alresford for regrouting?

Yes, Alresford is within the area we cover. Our work covers London and the South East. Just ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email with a few details of the job, and we will send you a clear quote.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes. Sealing over old sealant is the main reason resealing fails early, so we never do it.

Do you reseal at the same time?

Most of the time, yes. Grout fills tile gaps and sealant handles the moving joints, so we renew both and it’s all in the quote.

Can you seal over the old sealant?

No. Fresh sealant does not stick to old sealant, and anything trapped underneath, including mould and water, stays there. It all has to come out first.

Which products do you use?

Each joint gets the product that suits it. Movement, water and weather all affect the choice, and we’ll tell you what we are using.

Do the sealants smell?

Sometimes, a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures, and ventilation helps.

How long does regrouting take?

As a guide, most jobs take a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Larger jobs naturally take longer, and we will say how long yours will take.

What affects the cost of regrouting

Every job gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • The product the joint needs

Every job is a little different, so we quote each one individually. Size, access and the product the joint needs all make a difference.

Helping us quote

To make quoting easier, please include:

  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • The address or postcode of the job
  • A few photos by email, if you can
  • Roughly how big the job is

We quote each job on its own, so start by telling us what you need. Simply phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and describe the job and send photos if you have them.

What happens on the day

When we arrive, we look over the joints with you first, so you know exactly what we’re doing. We protect the surfaces around the joints before any work starts. The work usually takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. Parking around Alresford is normally easier than in a town centre, but mention any lanes, gates or long drives. If the job is outside, tell us about side access and how high the joints are.

  1. First we agree what’s being done and flag any loose tiles.
  2. We remove the old grout carefully.
  3. Dust is cleared from every joint.
  4. The new grout goes in, then the tile faces are cleaned.
  5. We renew the silicone at the corners and edges.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking rules near the property
  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts

Advice

DIY versus a professional finish

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
