Trusted gutter sealing in Sleapshyde

Gutter sealing in Sleapshyde, done properly

Gaps along uPVC fascias and soffits look untidy and can let in water and draughts. They’re sealed in a matching colour where one is available. We are often asked to deal with rain getting in around a garage door and old sealant on roofline trims that has split, on soffit joints, garage door frames and gutter joints.

Around Sleapshyde, older buildings can be stone, brick or timber-framed, many with extensions added later. The joints where those materials meet are the weak points.

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job.

How it works

Before we leave, we go over the finished joints with you and tell you how long to leave it. The visit itself usually takes an hour or two for a few joints, longer for a full run, depending on how much there is to do. Somewhere as small as Sleapshyde, access is often the only tricky part. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.

  1. First we agree which joints need sealing.
  2. We clean out each joint.
  3. The joints are dried.
  4. We apply exterior or gutter sealant and finish it neatly.
  5. We check our work before we leave.

Preparing for the visit

Keeping the joints in good condition

Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:

  • Look for streaks or damp on the wall below gutters
  • Clean out the gutters once or twice a year
  • Sort out a dripping joint early
  • Look at the gutters while it’s raining

Check the joints after heavy rain. Drips are easiest to spot while it’s raining.

A leaking stop end is best sealed before the wet months. Water down the wall all winter can cause damp.

What happens if it’s left?

If the problem is a blocked downpipe, sealing will not help. We look at what’s really happening and tell you if something else is needed. In a small place like Sleapshyde, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

Some things make a job bigger or smaller: the old material and how easily it comes out, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. Your quote takes all of that into account.

Sleapshyde: your questions answered

Should the sealant in an older Sleapshyde home be renewed?

Often, yes: cracked, shrunken or mouldy sealant has done its job. New sealant will not stick to old, so the old bead has to come out completely first.

Do you cover smaller places like Sleapshyde?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Can I do it myself?

Sometimes. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.

Can you reach high gutters?

Single-storey work is the most straightforward. For anything higher, we will confirm what access is needed before we book.

Do you work for letting agents?

Yes. As well as householders, we work for landlords, agents, businesses and hotels in Sleapshyde.

Does someone need to be in?

That depends on where the joints are. Inside work needs someone to give us access, and for outside work we will agree access with you when we book.

What guarantee comes with the job?

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Yes. Tell us about everything you’d like done and we’ll quote it together.

What gutter sealing looks like in Sleapshyde

Compared with the north and west, the South East gets less rain, but outside sealant still needs a dry, clean surface, so outdoor work is planned around the forecast. With historic houses such as Hatfield House (about 2.5 miles north-east) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Sleapshyde as well as newer homes. Where a home is older, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth.

If you look after a building such as Colney Heath Junior Mixed Infant and Nursery School, movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s. Letting a property close to Welham Green station? Then a dripping gutter joint or loose fascia trim is easy to miss until damp shows inside.

Sleapshyde is about 2 miles south-west of Hatfield, in Hertfordshire. From the centre of Sleapshyde to the outskirts, gutter sealing is available for homes and businesses alike. Sleapshyde is one of 381 places in Hertfordshire we cover for gutter sealing. For nearby work, see our London page, about 18 miles away.

What we are called out for in Sleapshyde

A sealant applied to a damp or dirty joint won’t bond. Some quick repairs peel off within a season or two.

If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:

  • Rain getting in around a garage door
  • Open joints in fascias and soffits
  • Old sealant on roofline trims that has split
  • Damp on an inside wall under a dripping gutter

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Mark, the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether they’re fully insured
  • When the joint can take water or movement
  • Which sealant they’ll use, and why
  • What preparation is included

Choosing a sealant specialist

When something else is needed

We will always be straight with you, so here’s what sealant can’t fix:

  • Roof leaks, slipped tiles or failed flashing (a roofer’s job)
  • Boards that have decayed or split
  • Cracked, split or warped gutter sections

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Where we work in Sleapshyde

  • Roofline trims
  • Gutter joints
  • Gutter end caps
  • uPVC fascias
  • Garage door frames
  • Soffit joints

Can I do it myself?

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

What affects the quote in Sleapshyde

We do not publish a price list, because no two jobs are the same. What we look at:

  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
  • The amount of work
  • Whether the work is at height
  • The number of rooms or windows

What it costs depends on the size of the job, how much old material has to come out and access to the work. We give a clear quote before we start.

Asking for a quote

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. When you get in contact, it helps to mention:

  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • Any access issues, like height or stairs
  • The type of property

Call for a quick quote, or email us if that’s easier. Describe what needs sealing and we’ll explain what’s involved.
