How we handle gutter sealing in Hatton

A lot of gutter leaks come down to one tired joint. The joint is cleaned, dried and resealed using a gutter sealant. If the gutter itself has failed, we say so. If you’re dealing with gaps along fascia and soffit joints and earlier gutter repairs that have peeled off, we can put it right, on garage door frames, gutter joints and soffit joints alike.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Hatton depends on the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.

You get a 12-month guarantee, the same in Hatton as everywhere else we work.

When it is not the sealant

New sealant cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. Sealant will not put right:

  • Fascias that need replacing
  • Downpipes that are blocked or broken
  • Sagging gutters or broken brackets

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.

How the visit works

Good joint work is mostly preparation, so that’s where we spend the time. Every joint is cleaned and dried before new material goes in. In total, it usually takes a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access. For a place like Hatton, longer drives are planned in advance. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. We find where the water is coming from and check the gutter is sound.
  2. The old sealant and dirt are cleaned out of the joint.
  3. The joint is dried before sealing.
  4. A gutter sealant is applied to the joint.
  5. We check the run and clear debris near the joints.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about any water getting in
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
  • Move anything stored near the joints

Advice

Aftercare tips

Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:

  • Check the gutters during heavy rain
  • Watch the wall under the gutters for staining
  • Get a dropping gutter looked at quickly
  • Keep the gutters clear of debris

Keep downpipes clear, so water can get away. A blocked pipe backs water up to the joints.

If an end cap is dripping, deal with it before winter. A winter of drips can lead to damp patches.

Hatton: your questions answered

Is gutter sealing in a coastal place like Hatton any different?

Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. Walls facing the sea are generally the first to need attention.

Will you come out to Hatton?

Yes, Hatton is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Yes. Just list everything you need and you will get one quote.

Do the sealants smell?

That depends on the sealant. Some smell for a while, some hardly at all.

Can you seal fascia and soffit joints?

Yes. Our work is the joints and we will let you know if a board has failed.

What sealant do you use?

The product depends on the job: anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas, and other sealants where joints move or face the weather. Brands we use include Arbo and Everbuild.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Always. Sealing over old sealant is the main reason resealing fails early, and it’s something we never do.

Can I do it myself?

Sometimes. The key is preparation: remove all the old material and work on a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.

Gutter sealing in Hatton: local notes

Hatton is within about 3 miles of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That is hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, especially on the side facing the sea. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex.

Whether the job is in Hatton itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

Leave it or put it right?

New gutters cost far more than a few resealed joints. If the gutter is sound and the drip is a joint, resealing is the sensible fix. If it’s broken or sagging, a gutter installer needs to look. In a place like Hatton, small leaks are easy to put off, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

Some things make a job bigger or smaller: the old material and how easily it comes out, whether mould needs treating, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

What affects the cost of gutter sealing

There’s no set price list. What we look at:

  • Access and height
  • The old material and how stubborn it is
  • The type of sealant required
  • Any mould that needs treating

Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: the amount of work, the access and the products needed, plus any working-time requirements on site. Ask us for a quote and we will explain what it covers.

Asking for a quote

To help us quote quickly, let us know:

  • A few pictures by email, if you can
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • The address or postcode of the job
  • Whether it’s a home or a business

The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is, and email photos if that is easy.

What we are called out for in Hatton

A sealant applied to a damp or dirty joint will not bond. Some quick repairs peel off within a season or two for this reason.

Any of these means the joints need attention:

  • Streaks down the brickwork from a leaking joint
  • Old gutter sealant that has let go
  • Drips from gutter joints and end caps
  • Cracked sealant along roofline trims

In and around Hatton, as anywhere, good gutter sealing starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Choosing a sealant specialist

DIY sealant or a professional job?

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

Some jobs are best left to a professional: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs need the right product, the right access and the right method.
