Eòlaigearraidh: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Eòlaigearraidh?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Does the coastal weather in Eòlaigearraidh affect outside sealant?

Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. It’s worth checking the walls that face the sea first.

Where are you based?

We’re a Crawley-based firm, with over 20 years’ experience. We work across South East England, London and Scotland.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No, it won’t last. It can look neat for a few weeks, but the new bead soon lifts. The old sealant has to come out completely.

Can you match the sealant colour?

We will suggest a colour to suit the surroundings, from white and clear to greys and other shades. The product needed can limit the range.

How long before the joint can be used?

It depends on the product and the temperature. Before we leave, we will tell you the cure time.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. Mr Mastic is an ARBOMaster approved applicator, and we are fully insured.

What sealant do you use?

The product depends on the job: anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas, and other sealants where joints move or face the weather. Brands we use include Arbo and Everbuild.

A lot of gutter leaks come down to one tired joint. The joint is cleaned, dried and resealed using a gutter sealant. If the gutter is broken or sagging, we will tell you. How it works

There’s no need to move everything out before we come, only the area right around the joints. We protect the rest, and the work takes an hour or two for a few joints, longer for a full run for a typical job. Around Eòlaigearraidh, distance and access matter more than parking. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints.

  1. First we agree which joints need sealing.
  2. Each joint is cleaned and any old sealant removed.
  3. We make sure everything is dry.
  4. We apply exterior or gutter sealant and finish it neatly.
  5. We check our work before we leave.

How to prepare

  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
  • Tell us about any water getting in
  • Clear items away from the joints we’re working on

What sealant work cannot fix

In fairness, there are a few things sealant will not fix:

  • Fascias that need replacing
  • Gutters that have dropped or pulled away
  • Cracked, split or warped gutter sections

If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think.

Surfaces we seal

  • Gutter joints
  • uPVC fascias
  • Garage door frames
  • Roofline trims
  • Gutter end caps
  • Soffit joints

How to look after the new joints

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Keep downpipes clear
  • Deal with a drip before winter
  • Do not leave a sagging gutter
  • Keep the gutters clear of debris

Make sure downpipes aren’t blocked, so water can get away. A blocked pipe backs water up to the joints.

Split sealant on fascias and trims lets water in behind. Sealing it early keeps the boards behind dry and the wall below.

A neglected joint can let water reach the structure, which matters even more when someone else lives there. Keeping joints in good order is simple maintenance.

What gutter sealing looks like in Eòlaigearraidh

Eòlaigearraidh is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That’s hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, especially on the side facing the sea. Work on the islands has to be planned around ferry crossings and the weather, so the more notice, the better.

In and around Eòlaigearraidh, as anywhere, good gutter sealing starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint. Whether the job is in Eòlaigearraidh itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

Can I do it myself?

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that is fine. We remove it and do the joint properly.

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

Why act early in Eòlaigearraidh

A dripping gutter joint keeps wetting the same patch of wall. Left, it can stain walls and lead to damp so early sealing is worthwhile. In an older home around Eòlaigearraidh, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.

Some things make a job bigger or smaller: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. Your quote takes all of that into account.
