How we handle gutter sealing in Ashridge

Gutter and fascia replacement is not our trade, and nor is roofing. Sealant fixes joints; it won’t fix a broken bracket, a cracked section or a blocked downpipe. We are often asked to deal with dripping gutter ends and fascia boards with gaps between them, across gutter joints, uPVC fascias and garage door frames.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Ashridge is booked around the forecast. Let us know about access to every wall, plus any garages or outbuildings.

We stand behind the work with a one-year guarantee, so you’re not left on your own once the job is done.

Signs you need gutter sealing in Ashridge

Gutter joints rely on seals that age. Sun and cold make the gutter expand and contract and that movement opens up tired joints.

The problems people generally mention when they call are:

  • Damp patches inside below a leaking gutter
  • Drips from gutter joints and end caps
  • Old gutter sealant that has let go
  • Garage door frames letting rain in

Around Ashridge, as everywhere, gutter sealing is only as good as the preparation behind it.

What gutter sealing looks like in Ashridge

London and the South East are among the drier parts of the UK, but outside sealant still needs a dry, clean surface, so outdoor work is planned around the forecast.

What we cannot put right

We’d rather tell you now than do work that won’t last, so here’s what sealant cannot put right:

  • Guttering that needs replacing
  • Leaks from the roof rather than a joint
  • Brackets that have snapped or loosened

If you’re not sure, just phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking.

What affects the cost of gutter sealing

There’s no set price list. The quote depends on:

  • The number of rooms or windows
  • Whether the work is at height
  • Mould in or behind the old joints
  • When we can work, for business premises

No two jobs are quite the same, so we quote each one individually. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference, and we’ll explain the quote if you ask.

What we need to know

Photos by email are helpful but not essential. Try to tell us:

  • Roughly how big the job is
  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking

Getting a quote is simple: let us know the job and the location and its rough size. Photos by email help us understand the job.

Should I try it myself first?

Some jobs are best left to a professional: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas call for the right materials, safe access and experience.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone will not bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

What happens on the day

Most of a good job is in the preparation, and we do not rush it. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. In total, it generally takes an hour or two for a few joints, longer for a full run. Somewhere as small as Ashridge, access is often the only tricky part. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.

  1. First, we find the drip and check the gutter is not cracked or sagging.
  2. The joint or trim is cleaned out and old sealant removed.
  3. We make sure the joint is dry before sealing.
  4. An exterior or gutter sealant is applied to the joint.
  5. The run is checked and any debris near the joints is cleared.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children

Questions from Ashridge

Can you do gutter sealing in Ashridge?

Yes, Ashridge is within the area we cover. Our work covers London and the South East. Just ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email with a few details of the job, and we’ll give you a clear quote.

I let a flat near Berkhamsted station. Can you help?

Yes. We work for letting agents and landlords as well as householders, and several properties can be quoted together. You can call 0345 464 0079 or email us with the details for a clear quote.

What information do you need?

Just the basics: where it is, what you’ve noticed and how we reach it. After that, simply ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email.

Do you have insurance?

Yes, we’re fully insured for every job we do.

Is it worth trying it myself?

You can, for simple jobs. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. If it doesn’t work out, we can redo it.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No. New silicone will not bond to old silicone, and anything trapped underneath, including mould and water, stays there. It all has to come out first.

What about gutters on a second or third storey?

Single-storey and low-level gutters are straightforward. For higher work, tell us about access and we will confirm what’s needed.

Do you guarantee gutter sealing?

Our 12-month guarantee applies to all our work.

How the job changes by surface

Soffit joints

Gaps at soffit joints can let in draughts and insects. We close them with a suitable sealant.

Gutter joints

Joints between gutter lengths are the most common leak point. They’re cleaned out, dried and resealed.

Why deal with it now?

New gutters cost far more than a few resealed joints. If the gutter is sound and the drip is a joint a reseal is all it needs. If it has failed, we will tell you. Older cottages and farmhouses around Ashridge can have timber floors and frames, where water from a failed joint can cause rot if it’s left.

Combining jobs into one visit is generally more efficient than separate visits. We will give you a clear price for the lot.
