How we handle glazing silicone in Skye of Curr

Our work covers conservatory joints, rooflights and glass panels, as well as frameless shower screens and glass balustrade bases. The old sealant comes out, the joint is cleaned and new silicone goes in. We work on glass-to-frame joints, shower screens and glass balustrade bases, and common reasons people get in touch are silicone pulling away from the glass and leaking glazing joints on a rooflight.

Mastic can only go onto a dry joint, so outside work in Skye of Curr depends on the weather. Tell us about access to all the windows and doors, upstairs included.

Our work is backed for twelve months, and the guarantee is the same wherever you are.

When it is not the sealant

It helps to know what we can’t do:

  • Glass that needs replacing
  • Misting between the panes of a double-glazed unit (a failed unit for a glazier)
  • Frames that have decayed or split

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before booking.

What happens if it’s left?

Leaks get worse, not better. Left, water can mark floors, damage plaster and rot timber, so it pays to deal with it early. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

Leaving a failed joint generally makes the job bigger, not smaller, because water and mould keep working on it. If you are unsure, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Windows and doors in Skye of Curr

Sash and case windows are common in older Scottish homes, and the joint between the box frame and the stone or render is traditionally pointed with sand mastic. Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

Around Skye of Curr, as everywhere, glazing silicone is only as good as the preparation behind it. Whether the job is in Skye of Curr itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

Your questions about glazing silicone in Skye of Curr

What guarantee comes with glazing silicone in Skye of Curr?

All our work, in Skye of Curr and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Do you cover smaller places like Skye of Curr?

Yes. Skye of Curr is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

I’m a tenant. Can you help?

Yes, though it’s best to check with your landlord first. Many landlords are glad to have it sorted.

Can I choose the sealant colour?

Normally, yes. White, clear and grey are common, and other colours are available for many products, and we will agree it with you first.

Do I have to be there?

For indoor joints, yes, someone needs to let us in. Once we’ve agreed the job, you do not need to watch us work.

Can landlords and businesses book you?

Yes. We work for householders, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels.

Which products do you use?

We choose the sealant for the joint, not the other way round. Where it moves, gets wet or faces the weather makes a difference, and we’ll tell you what we’re using.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes, every time. New sealant will not bond properly to old, so any old material comes out before anything new goes in.

Aftercare tips

After the cure time, these simple habits help:

  • Clear the conservatory gutters regularly
  • Avoid strong solvents on or near the sealant
  • Inspect the sealant on glazing annually
  • Get a new leak looked at quickly

Squeegee a shower screen after each shower and let the room air. That slows mould growth on the bead.

A leaking shower screen may not show at first. It can damage the floor or the ceiling below long before you see it.

What we do, step by step

We keep the work tidy and contained to the area we’re working on, so you can get on with your day. The job usually takes anything from an hour or two to most of a day, depending on the size of the job, and we tell you how long to leave it before we go. Around Skye of Curr, distance and access matter more than parking. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. We look at the glazing and agree which joints need resealing.
  2. Old sealant is removed from the glass and frame.
  3. We clean and prepare the joint.
  4. New glazing silicone goes in and is finished neatly.
  5. We inspect the work and test it where we can.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any tricky access
  • Tell us if parking is tricky
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in

Can I do it myself?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.
