Glazing silicone in Aiginis, done properly

Many conservatory leaks come down to failed sealant at the glass-to-frame or frame-to-wall joints. We find the joint that’s letting water in and renew it, and if it’s something sealant cannot fix, we’ll tell you. If you are dealing with failed joints on frameless glass and leaks where conservatory glass meets the frame, we can help, on glass-to-glass joints, glass balustrade bases and rooflights alike.

In and around a place like Aiginis, homes range from older stone-built cottages to newer houses. Exposed frames and sills take the full force of wind-driven rain, so the mastic there works hard.

We guarantee the work for a year. If something is not right with it in that time, tell us and we’ll put it right.

Glazing silicone in Aiginis: local notes

Aiginis is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That is hard on glazing joints and frame seals, especially on the side facing the sea. Many older homes in Scotland have sash and case windows, and the joint between the box frame and the stone or render is traditionally pointed with sand mastic.

Whether the job is in Aiginis itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

Aiginis (Gaelic: Aignish) is in Na h-Eileanan Siar. We provide glazing silicone to homes and businesses in Aiginis and the surrounding area. Our Na h-Eileanan Siar coverage runs to 87 places, and Aiginis is one of them.

Work in HS2 is quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. Nearby, we also carry out glazing silicone in Na h-Eileanan an Iar (1 mile north-east), Knock (1 mile east), Lower Bayble (2 miles east), Garrabost (2 miles north-east) and Pabail Uarach (3 miles east). Island and remote addresses take a little more planning, so please mention your location when you send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Aiginis: your questions answered

Is Aiginis in your area for glazing silicone?

Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Aiginis is part of that. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we will send you a clear quote.

Does the coastal weather in Aiginis affect outside sealant?

Coastal weather is harder on outside sealant: there’s more wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt in the air. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.

Is it worth trying it myself?

You can, for simple jobs. The key is preparation: remove all the old material and work on a clean, dry joint. If it does not work out, we can redo it.

Is the work guaranteed?

You get our 12-month guarantee on all our work.

Can you match the sealant colour?

We will suggest a colour to suit the surroundings, from white and clear to greys and other shades. The choice depends on the product the joint needs.

Will resealing stop my conservatory leaking?

It depends on the cause. Sealant joints we can renew but roof and panel problems need another trade.

Can you reseal a frameless shower screen?

Yes, it’s a common job. The screen is resealed with anti-fungal silicone made for wet areas.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Yes, always, and completely. New silicone does not stick to old silicone, so the joint is cleaned back first.

How we quote for glazing silicone

The price is agreed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
  • Access and height
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • Mould in or behind the old joints

Every job is a little different, so we quote each one individually. Size, access and the product the joint needs all make a difference, and we will explain the quote if you ask.

What to tell us for a quote

What to tell us when you ask for a quote:

  • What’s wrong with the joints now
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • Where the property is

To get a quote, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the location and a short description of the problem. We’ll give you a clear quote before any work starts.

When to call us in Aiginis

UV light ages silicone, especially on conservatory roofs. It goes brittle, cracks and stops sticking on the glass.

Common reasons people contact us are:

  • Shower screens leaking along the wall or tray
  • Split or lifting silicone on glass
  • Water tracking down the inner face of the glass
  • Water getting into a conservatory at the joints

Around Aiginis, as everywhere, glazing silicone is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Are they insured?
  • How long the guarantee is
  • Whether you can choose the colour
  • What the cure time is

How the visit works

We work through the job in order: protection first, then preparation, sealing and a tidy-up. Typically it takes anything from an hour or two to most of a day, depending on the size of the job and we leave things clean and tidy. In smaller Scottish places, parking is usually less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. First we agree the joints to be done.
  2. We cut away the failed silicone.
  3. We clean and prepare the joint.
  4. New glazing silicone goes in and is finished neatly.
  5. We inspect the work and test it where we can.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
  • Tell us if parking is tricky
  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed

Keeping the joints in good condition

Looking after new joints is easy:

  • Clean glass with a mild cleaner and a soft cloth
  • Get a new leak looked at quickly
  • Ventilate the conservatory to cut condensation
  • Squeegee the shower screen after each use

Squeegee a shower screen after each shower and let the room air. It helps stop mould getting into the silicone.

A small conservatory leak soon spreads. Water travels along the frame and into the wall, so get it looked at when you first see it.

What we cannot put right

New sealant cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not solve:

  • A sealed unit that has misted inside
  • Cracked or broken glass
  • A sagging or failing conservatory roof

If you’re not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer before booking.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Glass-to-frame joints
  • Glass-to-glass joints
  • Rooflights
  • Shower screens
  • Conservatory frames
  • Glass balustrade bases

Surface by surface

Glass balustrade bases

Balustrade bases are exposed outdoors. Renewing the sealant keeps water out of the channel.

Glass-to-frame joints

We cut the old silicone from the glass without scratching it before new glazing silicone goes in.

Why it’s worth doing now in Aiginis

Silicone around glazing needs the right product. A general-purpose tube may not bond well or may react with the frame so we choose a glazing silicone instead. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: the amount of work, how we reach it and what it needs, along with when we can work on site. Ask us for a quote and we will go through it with you.
