What affects the quote in Tewin

We do not publish a price list, because jobs vary so much. The quote depends on:

  • Any mould that needs treating
  • How many areas need sealing
  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • The size of the job

Every job is a little different, so we quote each one individually. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all play a part.

What we need to know

Photos by email are helpful but not essential. Try to tell us:

  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • Photos by email, if that is easy
  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • Roughly how big the job is

Getting a quote is simple: let us know the job and the location and its rough size. Photos by email help us understand the job, and we will come back to you with a quote.

Fire rated sealant in Tewin

Filling a fire-stopping gap with standard silicone or caulk doesn’t make it fire-rated. Anything unsuitable comes out first and reseal with a fire-rated product tested for that kind of gap. We work on service penetrations, plasterboard & masonry and pipe & cable gaps, and common reasons people get in touch are fire stopping disturbed by later work and unsealed gaps around fire door frames.

Work in a small place like Tewin is planned ahead, journey included, so the job can fit around bookings, guests or opening times where possible.

We guarantee the work for a year. If something is not right with it in that time, tell us and we will put it right.

How to look after the new joints

Looking after new joints is easy:

  • Look in service cupboards and ceiling voids from time to time
  • Ask which product was used before you paint
  • Make resealing part of every contractor’s brief
  • Report cracked or damaged seals as soon as you notice them

Avoid covering a sealed gap with anything that isn’t part of the tested detail. If it needs repair, use the same type of product. Ask us if you are not sure which product was used.

When you plan work that goes through walls or ceilings, plan the fire stopping too. Catching it then saves a separate visit later.

How the job changes by surface

Door frames

A door can only do its job if the gap behind its frame is sealed too. We seal that gap with a fire-rated sealant suited to the frame and wall.

Plasterboard walls

Service holes in plasterboard are often rough and oversized. Where a hole is bigger than the sealant’s tested range, it needs another approach and we will flag it.

Honest limits

New sealant can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not solve:

  • Issuing a fire rating or certificate for a building
  • Doors that aren’t fire doors in the first place
  • Big openings where sealant alone is not the tested solution

If you are not sure, just ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer.

The process

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us the job and we’ll take it from there. The work itself takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on how many gaps there are. Somewhere like Tewin needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. We bring what the job needs, so it can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. We go through the gaps on your list or survey and check each one’s size and substrate.
  2. We remove any old or unsuitable filler and clean the gap.
  3. Backing or fill is fitted where the product’s tested detail calls for it.
  4. We apply the fire-rated or intumescent sealant to the specified depth and tool it.
  5. Locations and products are noted so you have them on file.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking rules near the property
  • Clear the area around the work
  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before

Advice

Should I try it myself first?

If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.

Not every job suits DIY: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs call for the right materials, safe access and experience.

Do you need fire rated sealant in Tewin?

Buildings are refitted and reconfigured over the years. A house turned into flats or an HMO, or an office split into smaller units, brings new walls, new service routes and new gaps.

These are the problems we’re asked about most:

  • New service routes left unsealed after building work
  • Gaps filled with a product that is not fire-rated
  • Open holes round services passing through fire walls
  • Old fire sealant that has split or come away

If you look after a church, hall or community building such as Church of St Peter, gaps around pipes and cables are worth checking after any building work there.

  • Whether all the old sealant comes out first

Workplaces and buildings in Tewin

Workplaces and the common parts of blocks of flats in England need a fire risk assessment under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, and gaps around services are often picked up there. We work to the specification you are given, installing the product to its tested details.

Schools such as Ridgeway Academy are buildings too, and service openings in fire-resisting walls need checking after any refurbishment. If you let a flat or house near Welwyn North station, any gap left by new services in shared walls should be closed with a fire-rated product.

Common questions in Tewin

Can you do fire rated sealant in Tewin?

Yes. We work across London and the South East, and Tewin is part of that. Just call 0345 464 0079 or email us with a few details of the job, and we’ll give you a clear quote.

Will you come out to Tewin?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. We are ARBOMaster approved, the scheme for applicators of Arbo sealants.

Where do you work from?

Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. Our applicators cover Tewin, along with the rest of our area.

Do you certify the fire stopping?

Ratings and certificates are not something we issue. What’s required is set by your assessor or designer, and the product’s tested details show what it achieves.

Is it messy?

Tidy work is part of the job. We protect what’s around the joints.

Is standard sealant good enough for a fire gap?

No. It looks sealed but will not perform as fire stopping. Use a product tested for that gap and service.

What does fire rated sealant cost?

Size, access and the old material all affect the cost. Ask us for a quote and we’ll talk you through it.
