Fire rated sealant in Hertford

Different surfaces, different methods

Plasterboard walls

Many fire-resisting walls in flats, offices and conversions are plasterboard. We use a product tested in that kind of wall for each gap size.

Service penetrations

New gaps tend to show up where services have been added. Old or unsuitable filler comes out before the right sealant goes in over any backing the detail calls for.

How we handle fire rated sealant in Hertford

Fire-rated sealant closes the gaps around pipes, cables and frames where they pass through a fire-resisting wall or floor. We apply intumescent and fire-rated sealants to the manufacturer’s tested details for each gap, with a record of the products and locations if you need one. If you are dealing with ordinary sealant used where a fire-rated product was needed and damaged fire sealant left by other trades, we can put it right, on plasterboard & masonry, linear gaps and pipe & cable gaps alike.

For anyone managing a school, care home, pub or office in Hertford, washroom sealant, kitchen joints and fire-rated sealant around service openings all need upkeep. Work can be planned around opening hours where needed.

Each job carries a 12-month guarantee, whatever its size.

Hertford questions

Is Hertford in your area for fire rated sealant?

Yes, Hertford is within the area we cover. Our work covers London and the South East. Just phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email with a few details of the job, and we will give you a clear price.

Do you work in hotels near Hertford?

Yes, hotels and guest houses are among the places we work. Rooms can be done a few at a time, so the building stays open.

Do I need to be at home?

Access is agreed with you when the job is booked. For inside work, that normally means someone being in.

Will we have a record of what was sealed?

Yes. You get a list of where we worked and what we used to keep with your fire safety documents.

Will it make a mess?

Tidy work is part of the job. Nearby surfaces are protected, and we clear up when we’re done.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. Mr Mastic is fully insured, with over 20 years’ experience in sealant work.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. We hold ARBOMaster approved applicator status, and we’re fully insured.

I rent my home. Can I book you?

Yes. Ask your landlord first, and we can send them the quote if that helps.

Can I do it myself?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

Keeping the joints in good condition

No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. Our tips:

  • Tell trades working in the building that fire seals must be put back
  • Check risers, ceiling voids and cupboards during building checks
  • Ask which product was used before you paint
  • Include fire stopping when you schedule refits

Don’t drill through or remove a fire seal without putting it back properly. New services through a sealed wall should include fire stopping in the plan.

Open gaps don’t only matter in a fire: noise, draughts and even pests can come through too. Dealing with them early helps with all of these.

Commercial buildings in Hertford

There are hotels and other places to stay in and around Hertford. Hotel work can be planned room by room, with out-of-hours working where needed. In England, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires a fire risk assessment for workplaces and for the common parts of blocks of flats, which is often where open fire-stopping gaps are first noticed. We apply fire-rated sealant to the assessor’s or designer’s specification and the product’s tested details.

If you let a flat or house near Hertford East station, any gap left by new services in shared walls should be closed with a fire-rated product. If you look after a church, hall or community building such as Hertford United Reform Church, gaps around pipes and cables are worth checking after any building work there.

When to call us in Hertford

Lots of unsealed gaps appear long after the building was completed. Electricians, plumbers and data installers drill through walls and ceilings and the hole they leave doesn’t always get resealed.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Open holes round services passing through fire walls
  • Gaps where walls meet ceilings or slabs
  • Old fire sealant that has split or come away
  • Joints picked up in a fire-stopping survey

Managing a site like Mill Mead Primary School? Then gaps opened by contractors for new cabling are a common finding in schools and offices.

What your quote should include

  • What the cure time is
  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • Whether VAT is included
  • Are they insured?

Landlord and commercial work in Hertford

Landlords and letting agents in Hertford can book us as well as homeowners. Resealing between tenancies is a simple way to keep a property in good order before the next move-in.

Businesses can book us for washrooms, kitchens, offices and more. For commercial premises, we can talk through working times when we quote.

The process

You don’t need to clear the whole room or building, only the area right around the joints. We protect the rest, and the job takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on how many gaps there are in most cases. In Hertford, parking is rarely complicated, though it helps to know about driveways or restrictions, and let us know if the work is upstairs, in a flat or up high outside.

  1. Before starting, we go through the specification or action list with you.
  2. Each gap is measured and its substrate and service noted.
  3. Unsuitable material such as ordinary foam or silicone is cut out.
  4. We fit backing where needed and apply the fire-rated sealant to depth.
  5. Every location is recorded with the product used for your files.

How to prepare

  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
