Window Mastic in Back
Window and door frames in Back need attention? We remove the old material, prepare the joints and seal them properly, with a one-year guarantee.
- Gaps left after new windows were fitted
- Rain getting in at the frame or under the sill
- Cracked internal joints between frame and plaster
How we handle window mastic in Back
Whether it’s one leaking patio door or every frame on the house, the work is priced before anything is done. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us how many frames there are and how they’re reached. We’re often asked to deal with rushed sealant from a window installation and leaking joints at the ends of sills, on timber windows & doors, patio & French doors and composite doors.
Older stone-built homes in Scotland often have sash and case or timber windows set in stone. The sealant has to suit the stone, which rules out acetoxy silicones that can mark or attack it.
The work is covered for a year after we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

What window mastic looks like in Back
Back is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on the mastic around window and door frames, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Work on the islands has to be planned around ferry crossings and the weather, so the more notice, the better.
Whether the job is in Back itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.
Back is about 6 miles north-east of Stornoway, in Na h-Eileanan Siar. Wherever you are in the HS2 postcode area, our applicators can take on window mastic. We cover 87 towns and villages across Na h-Eileanan Siar, large and small.
All of HS2 is within our area for window mastic. Window mastic is available to properties on Broadbay View, Rathad na Sgoile and Sraid na H-Eaglaise and the roads around them. We also cover Sulaisiadar (5 miles south-east), Garrabost (5 miles south-east), Na h-Eileanan an Iar (5 miles south), Knock (5 miles south) and Aiginis (5 miles south). Remote and island addresses need a little more planning, so please mention your location when you drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

What the job involves on each surface
Timber windows & doors
Timber moves with moisture as well as heat, so the joint must stay flexible. The paint or stain needs to be sound where the sealant meets it.
Composite doors
Composite doors are normally hung in an uPVC-type frame, so its perimeter joint is sealed much like a window. The bead is colour-matched to the frame.
Do you need window mastic in Back?
Plenty of failed mastic was poorly applied in the first place. Mastic laid onto dusty, damp or crumbling surfaces didn’t grip properly, and it lets go sooner than it should.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Water coming in at the bottom corners of a door
- Gaps left after new windows were fitted
- Hard, cracked sealant around windows
- Draughty joints inside around the window
In and around Back, as anywhere, good window mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.
What to look for in a quote
- Whether they’re fully insured
- What guarantee comes with the work
- How hidden problems are handled
- Who does the work, and how experienced they are
Can I do it myself?
If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We cut it out and start again, so tell us about it when you ask for a quote.
Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.
How the visit works
Every visit runs the same way: we check the joints, protect the area around them, carry out the job and clear up. Most jobs take most of a day for a typical house, less for a few frames. Somewhere like Back may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- We check how each frame can be reached safely.
- All the failed sealant is cut away, along with any loose debris.
- The surfaces are cleaned and left dry.
- Backing rod fills deep voids and the sealant goes in on top.
- We tool the joint so water runs off, then clear up.
How to prepare
- Tell us about any water getting in
- Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
- Let us know about stairs, lifts or work at height
How to get a quote
Every job is quoted individually, so the first step is telling us about yours. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details.
Advice
How to look after the new joints
Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. We recommend:
- Keep paint off silicone joints
- Keep drainage slots and sill grooves clear
- Keep timber frames painted
- Do not aim a pressure washer at the joints
Wipe the frames with soapy water when you clean the windows, and avoid solvent cleaners on the sealant.
A failed joint lets water into the wall a little at a time. You might not see it until plaster blows or a damp patch appears inside. Early resealing stops it reaching that point.
What sealant work cannot fix
Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we will tell you before any work starts. It won’t solve:
- Faulty window hardware
- Rotten timber, which needs a joiner first
- Draughts through the window seals rather than the frame
If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think.
Surfaces we seal

What affects the cost of window mastic
The quote reflects the job in front of us. We look at:
- The size of the job
- Any working-time requirements on site
- Whether the work is at height
- Whether there’s mould to deal with
Leaving a failed joint normally makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re not sure whether it needs doing, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you an honest view and a quote.
What we need to know
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in contact, it helps to mention:
- Any access issues, like height or stairs
- Whether it’s a home or a business
- Whether it has been sealed before
- What’s wrong with the joints now
The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is.
Common questions in Back
Is Back within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Does the coastal weather in Back affect outside sealant?
Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. Walls facing the sea are normally the first to need attention.
Do you work for hotels and businesses?
Yes. Larger jobs can be planned room by room or area by area.
How much does window mastic cost in Back?
Size, access and the old material all affect the cost. Ask us for a quote.
Is there any odour?
It depends on the product. Some products have a noticeable smell, others very little.
Do I need to be at home?
Access is agreed with you when the job is booked. Indoors, that generally means someone at home.
Can I add another job to the visit?
Yes. Several rooms, windows or areas can go on one quote.
Will resealing my frames help with draughts?
If the draught is coming in around the frame, yes. If it’s through the window’s own seals or a hinge, that’s a different fix, and we will say so.
