About our remedial sealant in Hurst
A movement joint stops working when its sealant splits or sets hard. We cut out the failed sealant and set the depth with backing, before resealing with a flexible product suited to the movement. We work on shrunken worktop sealant, leaking tray & enclosure joints and botched or over-sealed joints, and the jobs we see most are a second bead peeling off the first and products that weren’t meant for the joint.
In a village or hamlet like Hurst, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses alongside a few newer houses. Movement in older walls and floors tends to show first as cracked grout or split sealant.
The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything isn’t right with it, ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email.

How the visit works
We bring everything the job needs with us, so there’s nothing for you to buy. Once we have agreed what’s being done, the area is protected and the work begins. Most jobs take a few hours, depending on how many layers have to come out. Somewhere as small as Hurst, access is often the only tricky part. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.
- We protect the surfaces around the joint.
- The botched or failed sealant is cut away completely.
- We clean and degrease the joint and look for signs of movement or water.
- New sealant goes in once the joint is dry, and is tooled smooth.
- You get the cure time and our view on why the joint failed.
Getting ready for the visit
- Move anything stored near the joints
- On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
- Mention any parking rules near the property

Should I try it myself first?
Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.
A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.
Questions from Hurst
Do you cover smaller places like Hurst?
Yes. Hurst is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Do you hold any approvals?
Yes. We’re ARBOMaster approved, the scheme for applicators of Arbo sealants.
Can landlords and businesses book you?
Yes, we do. Domestic, commercial and hotel work are all part of what we do.
When is the sealant fully cured?
Different products cure at different speeds, so follow the cure time we give you.
Should I try DIY first?
That depends on the joint. High-level, external movement and fire-rated joints are professional jobs, while a short indoor joint may be within reach.
Someone sealed over the old bead. Can you fix it?
Yes. It’s slower than a standard reseal, because every layer has to come out cleanly, but it’s what makes the new bead last.
Can failed expansion joints be resealed?
Yes. If a joint has been filled with mortar or rigid filler, we rake it out where possible, then the joint is sealed properly.

What else we do in Hurst
Different surfaces, different methods
Movement & expansion joints
Movement joints in floors, walls and façades need a flexible sealant set to the right depth. We remove the failed sealant, fit backing and reseal.
Over-sealed & botched joints
Every layer has to come out, including the smears and film on surrounding tiles. New sealant needs a fully clean surface.
Looking after it afterwards
Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. Our advice:
- Use a soft cloth, not a scourer, on silicone
- Always have old sealant cut out, not covered
- Run the fan after every shower
- Don’t point over movement joints
Keep the room ventilated: use the extractor or open a window after showering.
Signs to act on: sealant lifting at the ends, a second bead visible on top of the first, black mould under the silicone, or stains below a bathroom. Each one is worth getting looked at.
When something else is needed
We won’t take on work that won’t last, so here’s what sealant can’t put right:
- Cracks in the fitting rather than the joint
- Movement from fittings that aren’t supported
- Sealant in an older building that needs testing for asbestos first
Not sure which it is? You can phone 0345 464 0079 or email us and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Hard water is the norm across most of the South East, so limescale builds up on sealant, grout and fittings, and it has to be cleaned off before new sealant goes in.

Signs you need remedial sealant in Hurst
How a joint is built matters as much as the product. Sealant packed too deep, or stuck to the back of the joint as well as the sides, cannot stretch, so it tears when the joint moves. Backing rod or bond-breaker tape prevents it.
It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:
- Floor or wall movement joints that have failed
- A second bead peeling off the first
- Caulk or the wrong sealant used in a wet area
- Beads that never stuck properly
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Nicholas Church of England Primary, washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.
