Gutter sealing in Aberdour

A drip at a gutter joint is easy to ignore, but the water lands on the same spot every time it rains. Resealing it is a small job while the gutter is still sound. We work on roofline trims, gutter joints and gutter end caps, and people most often call us about old sealant on roofline trims that has split and dripping gutter ends.

Older stone buildings need a sealant that suits the stone, not an acetoxy product that can mark or attack it. On newer homes, the movement joints and roofline trims are what need watching.

You’re covered for a year from the day we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

How to look after the new joints

No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:

  • Look at the gutters while it’s raining
  • Glance at the soffit joints now and then
  • Clear leaves and moss from the gutters
  • Watch the wall under the gutters for staining

A sagging gutter needs its brackets checked. Movement will pull the joints open again.

If an end cap is dripping, deal with it before winter. A winter of drips can lead to damp patches.

Gutter sealing in Aberdour: local notes

Aberdour is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That is hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, especially on the side facing the sea. Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

In the older streets around St Fillan's Church, the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

Aberdour is about 5 miles east of Dunfermline, in Fife. Whether you are in the middle of Aberdour or further out, gutter sealing is available for homes and businesses alike. 133 places in Fife are on our list. You can also see our page for Edinburgh, roughly 9 miles from Aberdour.

What happens on the day

When we get to you, we check the joints match what you told us. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. After that, the work takes a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access. Outdoor work around Aberdour depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We look at the gutters, fascias and trims and agree the joints to seal.
  2. We clean out each joint.
  3. The joints are dried.
  4. The sealant is applied and finished.
  5. We check our work before we leave.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about any water getting in
  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Move anything stored near the joints

How we quote for gutter sealing

We do not publish a price list, because jobs vary so much. The quote depends on:

  • Any working-time requirements on site
  • The number and length of the joints
  • How many areas need sealing
  • Access and height

No two jobs are quite the same, so we quote each one individually. Size, access and the product the joint needs all play a part, and we’ll explain the quote if you ask.

What to tell us for a quote

To make quoting easier, let us know:

  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
  • A few photos by email, if you can
  • How we’d reach the joints

Quotes start with a quick conversation. Describe the problem, the location and the size of the job. Whenever you’re ready, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Honest limits

Before booking, it’s worth knowing the limits too:

  • Boards that have decayed or split
  • Downpipes that are blocked or broken
  • Guttering that needs replacing

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Do you need gutter sealing in Aberdour?

Overflowing gutters can look like leaking joints. If the downpipe is blocked, water has nowhere to go, which is why we look before we seal.

These are the problems we are asked about most:

  • Water running down the wall below the gutter
  • Drips from gutter joints and end caps
  • End caps that drip every time it rains
  • Internal damp traced to a gutter joint

For landlords with property near Aberdour station, leaking gutter joints on a rental are best caught before they stain the walls.

What your quote should include

  • The length of the guarantee
  • What product goes in the joint
  • Whether all the old sealant comes out first
  • How the surfaces are prepared before sealing

What the job involves on each surface

Gutter end caps

End caps take the pressure of water running along the gutter. A failed seal makes them leak.

Garage door frames

Garage door frames let rain in when their sealant fails. We cut it out and reseal.

Aberdour questions

Does the coastal weather in Aberdour affect outside sealant?

Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.

Will you come out to Aberdour?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Do you clean gutters?

We clear debris around the joints we’re sealing. A full clean of the gutters isn’t part of it.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Yes, and it often makes sense. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes. Larger jobs can be planned room by room or area by area to suit the site.

Where do you work from?

We work from Crawley. Our applicators cover Aberdour.

Do you replace gutters or fascias?

No. We seal leaking joints, end caps and trims. A gutter installer or roofer deals with replacement.

Is it worth trying it myself?

It depends on the job. High-level, external movement and fire-rated joints are professional jobs.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We remove it and do the joint properly.
